Wirtz turns on the style as Leverkusen down Celtic
Florian Wirtz ran the show in Glasgow, scoring for the sixth consecutive game as Bayer Leverkusen beat Celtic 4-0 to go top of UEFA Europa League Group G on goal-difference.

Leverkusen went for the jugular right from kick-off, and after Kerem Demirbay had tested Joe Hart with an early drive, Lucas Alario had the ball in the back of the Celtic net after following up on Wirtz's effort, but the goal was ruled out for offside. The hosts nearly returned fire when Kyogo Furuhashi got around Lukas Hradecky, but Jonathan Tah did magnificently to get back and recover the danger. Kyogo broke through once again midway through the half, but Hradecky raced off his line and got enough on the Japan attacker's shot to turn it round for a corner. Leverkusen began to settle after that flurry, though, and they nearly took the lead after Wirtz picked out Moussa Diaby with a fine lofted pass, Joe Hart denying him at the last. Bayer broke through moments later, however, Mitchel Bakker taking advantage of David Turnbull's slip and squaring for Piero Hincapie to score a simple first goal for the club. Leverkusen doubled their advantage before the half was out when Paulinho picked out Wirtz who scored for the sixth game on the bounce.
Celtic started the second half brightly, and Kyogo's shot on the spin looked destined for the far corner, but Hradecky - who has saved a Bundesliga-high 28 shots this season - was equal to the effort. Jota then tested the Finland No.1 with a thumping effort from the edge of the box, but a big left hand kept him at bay before Leil Abada fired wide on the rebound. Turnbull then spun a free-kick wide of Hradecky's near post, but just as in the first half, Bayer began to get their foot on the ball in the second, and they pulled further clear when Alario sent Hart the wrong way from the penalty spot. Kyogo then missed an open goal at the other end before Alario followed suit, firing high from point-blank range after Jeremie Frimpong's cut-back. Second-half substitute Patrik Schick - scorer of the Goal of the Tournament against Scotland at the recent UEFA Euro 2020 - tested Hart with another effort late on, before Amine Adli added gloss to the scoreline at the death.
