Haaland brace only enough for Dortmund draw at Cologne

Erling Haaland scored the first and last goals of the game as Borussia Dortmund earned a late point against relegation-threatened Cologne, with Ondrej Duda and Ismail Jakobs on target for the Billy Goats.

Dortmund were looking for revenge at the RheinEnergieStadion after their defeat to Cologne at the Signal Iduna Park earlier this season. They got off to the perfect start in their search for three points as Haaland fired home inside three minutes. BVB’s No.9 gathered Emre Can’s long ball and was too hot for Jorge Mere to handle before slotting through the legs of Timo Horn at the near post. Dortmund were ahead on the scoreboard, but the hosts responded well to going behind. Haaland dragged a shot wide just after the half-hour mark but it was Cologne getting on the ball more and more, and the Billy Goats found their way back into the game minutes later. Noah Katterbach’s shot hit the arm of Jude Bellingham in the Dortmund penalty area, and referee Daniel Siebert gave a penalty after consulting with the VAR. Duda sent Marwin Hitz the wrong way with his spot-kick to level the scores. Bellingham then forced a save from Horn at the other end, but it was all square at the break.

Dortmund came flying out of the blocks in the second half with Youssoufa Moukoko on in place of Julian Brandt. Haaland forced a save from Horn before missing a Thorgan Hazard cross by a matter of inches. The game came to life before reaching the hour mark, bypassing the midfield completely in an end-to-end scrap which saw Horn and Hitz both forced into action. Dortmund’s long-ball strategy was struggling for results and in the end, it led to Cologne’s go-ahead goal. Jakobs was sent in behind Thomas Meunier on the counter-attack and he fired home a stunning strike at Hitz's near post. Dortmund had chances to equalise and they fell to the perfect man, or so they thought. Haaland glanced Meunier's cross off the post before connecting with Reinier's header down in front of goal, but couldn't keep his shot on target from close range. Just as hope looked to be lost for Dortmund, up popped the Norwegian once more to slide home Ansgar Knauff's cross from the right on his Bundesliga debut.
