Cologne beat Paderborn for first home win

Louis Schaub, Simon Terodde and Sebastiaan Bornauw got the goals against Paderborn to give Cologne a first home win under coach Achim Beierlorzer.

Cologne 3-0 Paderborn
Goals: 1-0 Terodde (9'), 2-0 Schaub (59’), 3-0 Bornauw (85')

After finishing last season six points clear of Paderborn at the top of Bundesliga 2, Cologne looked to assert their authority from the start at the RheinEnergieStadion and dominated the play. The hosts had five attempts on goal in the opening nine minutes, Terodde using the final one to put the Billy Goats in front, but only after a lengthy VAR check for offside. Last season’s Bundesliga 2 top scorer reacted quickest to a failed clearance from Mohamed Dräger to beat Leopold Zingerle from close range after a corner. Paderborn slowly grew into the game with Kai Pröger looking the most likely but goalkeeper Timo Horn remained unchallenged. Terodde came within inches of a second when again reacting quickest to a Kingsley Ehizibue cross but he struck the outside of the post minutes before the break.

Despite a slower start to the second half, the Bundesliga 2 champions doubled their lead on the hour mark when Kingsley Schindler’s deep cross from the right was met by the head of Schaub, who was able to power it past Zingerle for his first Bundesliga goal. Schindler thought he had the Billy Goats’ third when Jonas Hector played him in behind, but the winger curled wide on his weaker foot. Paderborn boss Steffen Baumgart sent on forwards Sven Michel and Ben Zolinski in an attempt to salvage a result for his side, who remain the only Bundesliga team this season without a win, but to no avail as Cologne substitute Jhon Cordoba struck the post for the hosts before Bornauw headed home the ensuing corner. Paderborn remain rooted to the foot of the table after eight games, while Cologne move out of the relegation positions up to 15th.
