Damion Downs has left Cologne ahead of their return to the Bundesliga, moving to the English Championship with Southampton.
The 21-year-old joins the Saints on a deal until 2029 after registering 10 goals and three assists in 29 games during the Billy Goats’ Bundesliga 2-winning season in 2024/25.
The German-born USA international made his debut for Cologne against Werder Bremen on Matchday 5 of the 2023/24 Bundesliga season, going to make 42 first-team appearances for the club before his departure.
“I came to Cologne from Ingolstadt as a teenager five years ago, and I'm extremely grateful to FC Cologne and the people of Cologne for their support and warmth throughout the entire time,” Downs said.
“I've always had fun, and that time will always remain in my heart. Promotion to the Bundesliga was one of the best moments of my life. I would especially like to thank my youth coach Stefan Ruthenbeck and Thomas Kessler, who have given me exceptional support. I hope Cologne have a successful season in the Bundesliga."
Having represented Germany’s U19 and U20 sides, Downs then chose to represent the US at international level, whom he qualifies for through his father. The young striker made his debut for the USMNT in his time at Cologne, coming on in a 4-0 defeat to Switzerland in June 2025 before making a further four appearances for the Stars and Stripes.
He now heads for pastures new, following the likes of Max Finkgräfe and Tim Lemperle out the door ahead of new coach Lukas Kwasniok’s debut Bundesliga season.
