Sancho sparkles on Reus comeback as Dortmund progress

Jadon Sancho and Marco Reus were both on the scoresheet for Borussia Dortmund against Duisburg in the DFB Cup.
Jadon Sancho and Marco Reus were both on the scoresheet for Borussia Dortmund against Duisburg in the DFB Cup.

Jadon Sancho scored one and created another for returning captain Marco Reus, who made his competitive comeback from injury as Borussia Dortmund eased into the second round of the DFB Cup with a 5-0 thrashing of Duisburg on Monday.

MSV Duisburg 0-5 Borussia Dortmund
Goals: 0-1
Sancho (pen. 15), 0-2 Bellingham (30'), 0-3 Hazard (39'), 0-4 Reyna (50'), 0-5 Reus (58')
Red card: Volkmer (38')

Dortmund were very much the favourites going into this match away to their third-tier opponents, and they wasted little time in living up to that billing. Early half-chances came and went before Axel Witsel's cross was handled inside the home team's penalty area, allowing Sancho to step up and score his first goal in the competition from the penalty spot. It remained one-way traffic after that, and BVB doubled their advantage on the half-hour mark through Jude Bellingham, the English teenager finishing calmly on his competitive debut following a lovely back-heel by Thorgan Hazard. The Belgium international added his own name to the scoresheet with a superb free-kick shortly before the interval, after Dominic Volkmer was sent off for hauling down Erling Haaland as last man.

Lucien Favre's side made sure to dispel any hopes of an unlikely Duisburg fightback early in the second half as they kept turning the screw. Reyna scored his second senior goal for Dortmund with a free-kick, albeit via a deflection off Witsel, to put the outcome beyond Duisburg's reach. There was still more to come from BVB, however, as Reus came off the bench to make his comeback from injury, seven months after sustaining a groin injury, and he marked the occasion with a smart finish within seconds of taking to the pitch, coolly slotting in from Sancho's pass. Dortmund eased off after that, their place in the second round draw on 18 October never in doubt.

As it happened!

FULL TIME!

It's all over at the Schauinsland-Reisen-Arena. Dortmund deservedly book their place in the second round after an impressive first-half display. Early goals after the break put the outcome beyond all doubt, while the icing on the cake was the return of captain Reus, who rounded out the scoring shortly after taking to the pitch.

88' AMBITIOUS FROM HUMMELS

The Dormtund centre-back spies Weinkauf a long way off his line and attempts an ambitious shot from the halfway line. The Duisburg keeper scampers back, but the ball goes just over anyway.

84' ANOTHER SUB FOR DUISBURG

Left-back Sicker goes off, Fleckstein comes on.

81' BRANDT GOES CLOSE!

Akanji splits the Duisburg defence with a lovely pass through to Reus. He scurries into the box down the left-hand side and pulls the ball back to Brandt, whose side-footed shot is well saved by Weinkauf.

77' ENGIN GOES OFF

Duisburg captain Engin is replaced by Krempicki.

74' REUS AND BRANDT SWITCHING IT UP

With Haaland taken off the pitch, Reus and Brandt are taking turns playing as the furthest Dortmund player forward, with Reunier also getting forward centrally too.

70' FOOT OFF THE GAS

Dortmund are still controlling the game and keeping possession well, but they appear to have eased off a touch in the last couple of minutes. Perhaps the spate of substitutions disrupted their rhythm somewhat.

66' LOVELY FOOTWORK FROM REINIER

The 18-year-old Brazilian wriggles away from his marker on the left and tries to dart into the box. He's brought down just outside the area with a thundering tackle, and wins a free-kick for his troubles.

64' MORE SUBS

Sancho is taken off after a productive night's work with a goal and an assist. Reinier comes on in his place, while Ghindovean replaces Scepanik for Duisburg.

60' WEINKAUF SAVES FROM BRANDT

Dortmund keep the ball well around the edge of the Duisburg box and eventually play it through to Brandt over on the left. He shoots quickly, but Weinkauf makes a good save for a corner.

58' GOAL! WHO ELSE BUT REUS?!

It's a fairytale comeback for the attacker, who beats the offside trap to collect Sancho's lofted pass. His first touch of the game is to control it, his second is to slot it low past Weinkauf and into the net, 35 seconds after taking to the pitch!

57' REUS COMEBACK!

The Dortmund captain returns to competitive action for the first time in over seven months, replacing Haaland. Brandt and Piszczek also come on, replacing Reyna and Meunier.

53' ONE-WAY TRAFFIC

Duisburg are still battling valiantly but they know the game is up and their heads have dropped slightly. Another goal is in the air.

50' GOAL! REYNA MAKES IT FOUR!

Dortmund get a free-kick this time, in a similar position to the one Hazard scored from. Reyna takes it and curls a beautiful effort past the wall. It takes a deflection off Witsel on the way through and goes in. That's Reyna's second senior goal for BVB, and his second in the DFB Cup.

48' ANOTHER FREE-KICK FROM SCEPANIK

Hazard is booked after conceding a free-kick 25 yards from his own goal, wide on Dortmund's left. Scepanik takes it and goes for goal with a dipping effort that Hitz does well to punch away.

46' SECOND HALF!

Duisburg get the ball rolling again. Both teams have made substitutions during the break, with Delaney coming on in midfield for Bellingham, who was on a yellow card.

Ademi and Jansen replace Vermeij and Karweina for the hosts.

HALF-TIME!

Dortmund are deservedly ahead at the interval after patiently probing and eventually opening the scoring through Sancho's penalty. Bellingham scored a lovely second and matters soon went from bad to worse for Duisburg, who were reduced to 10 men just before the break. Hazard's free-kick has put BVB firmly in control.

45' WITSEL HAS A POP

The midfielder surges forward from the right, with Haaland's run dragging a defender out of position and opening up space on the edge of the box. Witsel sweeps into it and shoots low with his left foot, but it goes just wide.

43' NICE TRY FROM SCEPANIK

Can concedes a free-kick for a shove in the back and Duisburg have a free-kick around 25 yards out. Scepanik takes it and strikes the ball well, but it sails over the bar.

39' GOAL! HAZARD HITS TOP BINS!

The ensuing free-kick is right on the edge of the box, and Hazard curls a beauty of an effort into the top corner, past Weinkauf's despairing dive.

38' VOLKMER SENT OFF!

The Duisburg defender is shown a straight red card after being absolutely bamboozled by Haaland. Sancho plays a little pass forward on the left and Haaland drops a shoulder and does a stepover, collecting the ball before looking to race clear. He'd be clean through on goal, but is brought down by Volkmer.

35' NO WAY THROUGH

Duisburg are trying to get forward as much as they can, but the gulf in class is all too visible: Dortmund are just too strong.

32' IMPRESSIVE STUFF FROM BELLINGHAM

The teenager has been one of the best players on the pitch so far as the very definition of a box-to-box midfielder. He's making interceptions and tackles all over the pitch, and making driving runs forward in the final third. He's going to be hard to keep out of the starting line-up at this rate.

30' GOAL! BELLINGHAM MAKES IT TWO!

A brilliant move from Dortmund, as Reyna feeds Meunier on the right. He pulls the ball back to the edge of the area, where a lovely bit of skill from Hazard - a neat back-heel - leaves Bellingham one-on-one with Weinkauf over towards the left. The English teenager takes a touch to control the ball before slotting it under the goalkeeper for his first competitive goal for BVB.

29' DUISBURG TEST HITZ

Another effort for the hosts, this time from Karweina. He lines up a shot from outside the box but doesn't get any real power behind it and Hitz makes a comfortable save.

24' MEUNIER AGAIN

The Belgium international swings in an inviting cross from the right, looking for Haaland in the middle. For a moment it looks like the Norwegian will have a simple tap-in, but a defender gets a foot on the ball at the last second to clear.

23' FIRST CHANCE FOR DUISBURG

Engin dribbles past a couple of BVB players to create a pocket of space for himself on the left-hand corner of the penalty area. He shoots for the far corner, but his effort flies over.

21' IMPRESSIVE FROM BELLINGHAM

The 17-year-old does well to drive forward down the right hand side, skipping past a couple of challenges before squeezing a cross in. It's collected easily by Weinkauf - much to Bellingham's annoyance. He's shown a yellow card for kicking a ball away in frustration.

19' NICE FROM MEUNIER

The Belgium international has looked god so far, always eager to charge forward down the right flank. He pings a lovely ball forward looking for Sancho, but it's just too strong and Weinkauf darts off his line to clear.

15' GOAL! SANCHO FROM THE SPOT!

The England international nets his maiden goal in the DFB Cup, sending Weinkauf the wrong way to give Dortmund the lead.

14' PENALTY TO DORTMUND!

Hummels releases Witsel on the left-hand side of the penalty area. His attempted cross hits Sauer's arm and the referee blows for a spot-kick.

12' FIRST SIGHT OF GOAL FROM HAALAND

A fantastic move is started by Bellingham wide on the right, with swift passes between Meunier, Reyna and Sancho creating an opening for Haaland. He could shoot on his right foot but opts to cut back onto his stronger left boot - and loses his footing. Duisburg breathe again.

10' ALL DORTMUND

Duisburg can't get out of their own half right now as Dortmund probe for an opening goal. The home side are packing their own penalty area and closing down the spaces in central positions, but there's still a sense of when - not if - BVB's first goal will come.

7' LOVELY FROM REYNA

The American teenager is first to a loose ball in the middle of the pitch and immediately tries to release Haaland, who's lurking on the shoulder of the last defender. It's a brilliant pass behind the backline, but is just too strong for Haaland to get to.

5' BVB ON TOP

Duisburg are pressing aggressively and trying to close down the spaces, but Dortmund look sharp and are getting forward with increasing menace. Reyna forces Weinkauf into a good save from a header, before Sancho almost creates an opening for himself with some fancy footwork on the edge of the box - but he can't quite get a shot away.

3' HAZARD ON THE LEFT, REYNA CENTRAL

Dortmund have begun with three at the back, while Hazard is on the left flank, Sancho on the right and Reyna in a central position in attacking midfield.

1' KICK-OFF!

Here we go!

REUS COMEBACK?

The Dortmund captain forms part of a scary looking bench this evening, with Julian Brandt and Reinier Jesus also available if BVB need goals. Reus looks set to play some part here as he regains match fitness. The 31-year-old's last competitive game was also in the DFB Cup; he picked up an injury in the last-16 defeat to Werder Bremen in early February.

FAVRE: "WE WANT TO WIN THE CUP"

Dortmund's last piece of silverware was the DFB Cup, which they lifted in 2018. Head coach Lucien Favre is keen to end that trophy drought this season, stating before this game that, "We want to win the cup". The Swiss tactician is expecting a "completely different match" to the friendly with Duisburg on 22 August, saying "there's no pressure in games like that".

HEAD-TO-HEAD

Believe it or not, Duisburg are unbeaten against Dortmund in the DFB Cup. They have only met once in the competition in fairness, but it was still a massive scalp for the Zebras, who won 2-1 after extra time in the 1975 semi-finals.

The sides also faced each other in a friendly just a matter of weeks ago, with Dortmund easing to a 5-1 triumph in a one-sided affair.

TEAM NEWS - DUISBURG

The hosts have been dealt a major blow with the news that chief creative influence Moritz Stoppelkamp is out due to illness. He was the team's top scorer last season and will be sorely missed.

There is positive news too, however. Regular left-back Arne Sicker has been passed fit to play from the off.

TEAM NEWS - DORTMUND

There are a couple of surprises in the Dortmund line-up, with first-choice goalkeeper Roman Bürki sidelined due to a hip complaint, meaning his understudy Marwin Hitz is between the posts for this one.

Raphael Guerreiro would normally begin on the left side in midfield, but a muscle tear has opened up space for Gio Reyna to start, while captain Marco Reus is on the bench as he continues his march towards full fitness after seven months out injured. Summer signings Thomas Meunier and Jude Bellingham make their competitive debuts for BVB, with Erling Haaland (who else?!) up front.
