Frankfurt down Bayern

Amin Younes starred as in-form Eintracht Frankfurt breathed new life into the title race with a hard-fought win over Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich.

Eintracht Frankfurt 2-1 Bayern Munich
Goals: 1-0 Kamada (12'), 2-0 Younes (31'), 2-1 Lewandowski (53')

Bayern were out-muscled, out-thought and outplayed by a ruthless Frankfurt side - shorn of the injured Andre Silva no less - in a captivating first half. Younes was at the heart of the Eagles’ best work, the Napoli loanee having an effort charged down before starting the move that produced the opening goal. Filip Kostic supplied the final pass, Daichi Kamada the first-time finish from inside the Bayern box. Younes narrowly missed the target with an audacious chip from halfway, before getting the goal his early endeavour deserved with a thunderous 12-yard strike finish. Bayern showed signs of life as Kevin Trapp clawed out a deflected Kingsley Coman effort, before saving well from Joshua Kimmich and the aforementioned Frenchman on the follow-up. Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting flicked a close-range attempt wide, but Frankfurt ended the half as they started, with only a smart reaction save from Manuel Neuer denying Almamy Toure a third.

If there only looked like being one winner at the break, the second half played out to the beat of a different drum. Bayern were unrecognisable following the half-time introduction of Leon Goretzka, the record champions duly reducing the arrears in the 53rd minute. Leroy Sane put two Frankfurt defenders on their backs, before crossing for Robert Lewandowski to flick beyond Trapp with the aid of a deflection. Goretzka headed a Coman cross wide as the league leaders turned the screw, with Coman forcing Trapp to swat away a teasing cross-shot that was creeping in under the crossbar soon after. Another purposeful Sane run carved open the Frankfurt defence with 20 minutes remaining, but Coman's first-time shot didn't match the Germany international's run and pass. Neuer thwarted Kostic and Trapp kept out Jerome Boateng in an edge-of-the seat finale as Frankfurt cemented their place in the top four, while Bayern's lead at the summit could be cut to two points if RB Leipzig beat Hertha Berlin on Sunday.
