Frankfurt and Dortmund share six goals in thriller

Borussia Dortmund came from behind twice to snatch a point in a six-goal thriller with Eintracht Frankfurt at the Deutsche Bank Park, and extend their unbeaten run to 17 matches in the Bundesliga.

Frankfurt 3-3 Dortmund
Goals: 1-0 Marmoush (pen. 8'), 2-0 Marmoush (24’), 2-1 Sabitzer 45’+1 (assist: Füllkrug), 2-2 Moukoko (54'), 3-2 Chaibi 62' (assist: Skhiri), 3-3 Brandt 82' (assist: Adeyemi)

Frankfurt went close to taking an early lead when Hugo Larsson brought a fine save out of Gregor Kobel, but Dortmund’s relief did not last long as a VAR call summoned the referee to the monitor, where he saw a Marius Wolf handball and pointed to the spot. Omar Marmoush sent his penalty straight down the middle to give the hosts the lead. The Deutsche Bank Park was bouncing, and the noise rose a notch when Aurelio Buta twice tested Kobel before Marmoush stole in to make it a case of third time lucky. It was Kobel’s last involvement as he left the game through injury, dealing another setback to the guests. His replacement Alexander Meyer was soon in the thick of the action when he came out to meet Marmoush as he closed in on a hat-trick, but this time a VAR review ruled in Dortmund’s favour and no penalty was given. Marcel Sabitzer pulled one back for the guests with a sweet low strike, but there was no time for breath in over eight minutes of stoppage time as Marmoush was denied a hat-trick by the post and both Füllkrug and Mats Hummels nearly snatched an equaliser.

After both teams finally had the chance to catch their breath, action resumed with Marmoush once again going close to completing his hat-trick, turning wide after a fine reflex save from Meyer had denied Ansgar Knauff. Dortmund levelled matters soon after when half-time substitute Youssoufa Moukoko slotted a low shot past Trapp, and the pendulum suddenly started to swing in their favour. Marco Reus almost put the visitors in front for the first time, but Trapp turned his effort behind for a corner, and then Farès Chaibi turned the tide again with a neat finish past Meyer for his first Bundesliga goal. It was not the final twist of a spectacular game, though, as that was reserved for Dortmund substitutes Karim Adeyemi and Brandt to combine for another equaliser.
