A stunning second-half strike from Goncalo Paciencia helped Eintracht Frankfurt peg back Borussia Mönchengladbach, who had led through Alassane Plea.
Frankfurt 1-1 Gladbach
Goals: 0-1 Plea 4' (assist: Lainer), 1-1 Paciencia (66')
Facing into what was their third game in six days, Eintracht's European heroes would be forgiven for feeling a little weary with Gladbach in town. In contrast to the celebratory atmosphere that accompanied the team's advance to the Europa League final last Thursday, the mood among home fans inside Deutsche Bank Park dipped slightly when Plea opened the scoring for the visiting Foals in the fourth minute. Taking advantage of a lapse in possession, Borussia made inroads through the middle before the ball was worked out to Stefan Lainer. The Austrian's cross from the right was met by Plea, who got ahead of Tuta to strike home his ninth goal of the campaign. Looking to improve on a return of just five points from eight games at home since the turn of the year, Die Adler sought a way back into the game, however, a Paciencia shot that stung the palms of goalkeeper Tobias Sippel was as good as it got for Oliver Glasner's men in the opening 45 minutes.
Eintracht introduced their Serbian crossing machine, Filip Kostic, to rapturous applause after the restart but it was Die Fohlen who began the half on the up. A Florian Neuhaus ball into the mixer had to be dealt with by Trapp, who was fully alert again soon afterwards to deny Breel Embolo after the striker burst clean through on goal. The second half quickly proving a livelier affair than the first, Stefan Ilsanker had the home supporters on their feet with a goalbound shot that was hacked off the line by Gladbach goalscorer Plea. The hosts gradually introducing more of the men who featured in the midweek win against West Ham, and the changes inspired the desired effect. Picking up possession outside the Borussia area, Paciencia unleashed a thunderbolt of a shot that blazed past Sippel and almost burst the net. At the other end, Makoto Hasebe ensured Eintracht didn't immediately fall behind, the defender blocking an Embolo effort on the line. Daichi Kamada had the ball in the net at the death, but the effort was ruled out, meaning both sides emerged with a point.
