Frankfurt held by Hertha

Eintracht Frankfurt missed the opportunity to tighten their grip on fourth place in the Bundesliga as they were held to a goalless draw by a spirited Hertha Berlin side on Saturday.

Eintracht Frankfurt 0-0 Hertha Berlin
Red card: Klünter (80')

Heavy rain before kick-off meant it took some time for the two teams to adapt to the tough, slippery conditions at the Commerzbank-Arena. Hertha began to probe midway through the first half, with Ondrej Duda's stinging effort forcing a fine save from Kevin Trapp. A few minutes later, visiting captain Vedad Ibisevic should have made it 1-0 from Lukas Klünter's excellent cross, but somehow managed to head wide with the goalmouth gaping. Heeding the warnings, Frankfurt began to grow into the game, and the lively Ante Rebic forced a brilliant close-range stop from Rune Jarstein after Luka Jovic's header across the six-yard box. Rebic then whipped in a teasing cross for Jonathan De Guzman, who could only volley over the bar as the two teams went in goalless after a balanced first half.

Hertha were on top again at the start of the second half, with Per Skjelbred firing high and wide, and Trapp called into action again to superbly tip Karim Rekik's low drive around the post. The Frankfurt keeper also palmed away a dangerous Marvin Plattenhardt cross as the capital club continued to pile on the pressure, without finding a way to make it count. Clear-cut chances were in short supply at the other end, with De Guzman again blasting over Frankfurt's best chance after being teed up by substitute Jetro Willems. Hertha were forced to play the last 10 minutes of normal with 10 men after Lukas Klünter picked up a second yellow card, but the Old Lady could still have won it had Skjelbred not been denied by the excellent Trapp at the death.

Kevin Trapp (c.) was the busier of the two keepers at the Commerzbank-Arena, making several fine saves on his way to an eighth clean sheet of the season.
