GERMANY WITH A MOUNTAIN TO CLIMB

Serge Gnabry loses possession on the halfway line. Shaw pushes on and finds Grealish, who crosses for Kane to send a stopping header past Neuer from close range. Germany need two goals in the final four minutes, or they're going out.

PICKFORD OUT

Hummels pings a ball over to Havertz, who immediately looks for Gosens, but it's too close to Pickford in the England goal.

MÜLLER!!!!

What. A. Chance. Havertz sends Müller through on the England goal. With the white shirts tracking back, he has just enough time to pick his spot, but can't find the target from 18 yards.

NOTHING DOING

Maguire concedes a free-kick on the edge of the England area. Thomas Müller steps up, but can only find the top of the England wall. Germany need a spark...

GERMANY TRAIL

Raheem Sterling puts England ahead. He starts the move, before laying the ball off for Kane and continuing his run. Grealish feeds Shaw, who crosses into the six-yard box, where Sterling side-foots beyond Neuer. Germany trail - just as they did against Portugal and Hungary...

CHANGES

Bayern's Serge Gnabry is on for Timo Werner, who caused England problems with his pace in the final third. England introduce Jack Grealish, with Bukayo Saka making way. Sancho looks on from the sidelines...

NOBODY HOME

It's Havertz and Werner linking up again for Germany. The latter slips the ball into the channel for his Chelsea teammate, but Turbo Timo's low cross is swept clear.

SAFE HANDS

Manuel Neuer claims a routine cross from Raheem Sterling. The ball was intended for Harry Kane, who was being well marshalled by Mats Hummels. He's been brilliant so far today, the Dortmund veteran.

SANCHO WARMING UP

Jadon Sancho is one of a handful of England players going through a pretty heavy warm-up routine. Could we be about to see the Dortmund winger?

THIRTY TO GO

Still no goals at Wembley. If it stays this way after 90 minutes, we'll need extra-time - and possibly penalties - to settle matters.

vs

QUICK COUNTER

Sterling tries to work an opening on the edge of the Germany area, but it's nicked away from him and the visitors can break. Havertz leads the charge, before feeing Werner to his left. His shot deflects behind off Maguire, though.

vs

GOSENS THREAT

Goretzka and Kroos patiently work an opening for Kimmich down the Germany right. He swings a cross over for Gosens, who can't make the desired connection and Pickford is able to punch clear.

48'
vs

HAVERTZ!!!

Germany play keep-ball as Kroos shifts the ball out to Gosens. Havertz takes on a rasping first-time shot from just inside the England box, forcing a flying save from Pickford. What a hit that was!

YELLOW PERIL

England's central midfield pairing of Rice and Phillips are both on yellow cards. Germany centre-back Matthias Ginter is also on a booking.

HUMMELS AGAIN!

Germany don't clear their lines as Sterling drives into the box. Kane picks up the loose ball and side-steps Neuer, before having his pockets picked by Hummels on the stretch. The goal was gaping - that was a sensational recovery challenge.

HUMMELS TO THE RESCUE

Goretzka concedes a free-kick in a dangerous position, left of centre. Trippier clips a cute ball into the six-yard box for Harry Kane, who would have been in for a free header but for Mats Hummels. The Dortmund defender stoops in, under pressure from England's No.9, to head clear.

41'
vs

GINTER DOES HIS JOB

England work the ball up to Sterling, who tries to roll Ginter - but the Germany and Gladbach sentry is having none of it. Superb defending.

32'
vs

WERNER!

Almost an opening goal made in the Bundesliga as former Leverkusen talent Havertz threads a ball through to Leipzig club-record scorer Werner. He takes the ball in his stride, but his shot is blocked by the on-rushing Pickford.

31'
vs

KIMMICH THE CREATOR

Brilliant from Joshua Kimmich following a sustained spell of England pressure. The Germany man cuts the ball back onto his left foot and drifts over a teasing cross that evades everyone, including the leaping Robin Gosens at the far post.

26'
vs

MAGUIRE CHANCE!

Matthias Ginter pulls back Kieran Trippier, the Gladbach man collecting a booking that would rule him out of the quarter-finals. Kimmich heads the free-kick behind for a corner that's worked back into the danger zone at the second attempt. Maguire wins it, but fails to test Neuer.

HUMMELS ON GUARD

Neuer is forced to vacate his goal to clear. England work the ball back into the attacking third, but Mats Hummels reads it well and steps in before Sterling can think about testing the back-tracking Neuer.

SUPER MANU!

Raheem Sterling shifts into a central position and takes aim, but Manuel Neuer's footwork is excellent and he dives to beat it away. The Germany skipper is equal to Harry Maguire's effort from the ensuing corner, too.

RIGHT IDEA

Kai Havertz lumps a diagonal ball up to Robin Gosens, but it's overcooked. The Germany left-wing-back ran riot against Portugal, remember. England still can't get a foothold.

INTO THE WALL

It's laid off to Havertz, who drives low into the England wall. Germany on top right now.

GORETZKA THREAT

Goretzka drives forward, before having his heels clipped by Declan Rice on the edge of the England area. Toni Kroos & Co. are plotting their next move, with Kai Havertz also hovering over the dead-ball...

BOO BOYS

Plenty of boos from the partisan home crowd, which tell you Germany are seeing plenty of the ball...

GORETZKA HAS A GO

Jordan Pickford makes the first save of the contest, shoveling up a Leon Goretzka strike from range. England don't want to let the Bayern man size up too many efforts like that.

Latest

Sancho has been in blistering form for Borussia Dortmund this year, contributing eight goals and the same number of assists in 15 Bundesliga matches in 2021, as well as top scoring in the DFB Cup as BVB lifted the trophy on the back of his brace in the final. However, the 21-year-old is yet to start for England at this summer’s Euros, only featuring for the final six minutes of their Group D win over the Czech Republic. It goes without saying that the winger will be chomping at the bit to play against so many of his teammates and league rivals from the last four seasons. Fellow Dortmund prodigy Jude Bellingham is also an option from the bench for Gareth Southgate after he became the then youngest player in European Championship history, aged just 17 years, 11 months and 21 days, when he came on in the first game against Croatia. He also featured as a sub as England secured top spot in Group D and a fourth fixture at Wembley with that 1-0 win over the Czechs, following a goalless draw with Scotland.

Germany looked destined for an early exit with 10 minutes remaining of their group stage before a Leon Goretzka thunderbolt earned the three-time European champions a 2-2 draw with Hungary and second place in Group F, behind France and ahead of holders Portugal, whom they beat 4-2. Bayern Munich teammate Thomas Müller had also come off the bench as Die Mannschaft pushed to save themselves. His exclusion had been a precautionary move due to a knee complaint, but the Raumdeuter – who was Man of the Match after scoring a brace when Germany last played England at a tournament in 2010 – is restored to the starting XI alongside Kai Havertz but without Serge Gnabry, who has six goals on his last two competitive visits to London. 2014 FIFA World Cup-winning coach Joachim Löw – in his final tournament as Germany boss – has settled on a 3-4-3 formation in front of captain and goalkeeper Neuer, with Joshua Kimmich the right wing-back. Goretzka replaces Ilkay Gündogan in midfield. The winner of this classic footballing fixture will play either Sweden or Ukraine in Rome in the quarter-finals.
