Bayer Leverkusen playmaker Florian Wirtz sustained an ankle injury on international duty with Germany on Monday evening, leaving him doubtful for this weekend's Matchday 7 clash against Eintracht Frankfurt.

Wirtz began Germany's UEFA Nations League match against the Netherlands - which Julian Nagelsmann's side won 1-0 - but was replaced by Leverkusen teammate Robert Andrich at half-time.

An MRI scan on Tuesday revealed that the 21-year-old sustained a capsular injury to his right ankle when he felt discomfort shortly before the interval.

Wirtz is currently undergoing treatment in Leverkusen and the club have confirmed that it is not yet known when he will be able to return to training, leaving him doubtful to feature on Bundesliga Matchday 7 this coming weekend.

Xabi Alonso's side are currently fifth in the table, three points behind leaders Bayern Munich, ahead of hosting third-placed Frankfurt at the BayArena on Saturday afternoon.

Leverkusen are not short of options to replace Wirtz in attacking midfield, with the likes of Jonas Hofmann, Martin Terrier and Nathan Tella all at Alonso's disposal.
