Six in a row for Werner and Leipzig

RB Leipzig continued their red-hot streak by recording a sixth successive Bundesliga victory in a 3-0 win at Fortuna Düsseldorf, with Timo Werner also on target for a sixth straight game.

Fortuna Düsseldorf 0-3 RB Leipzig
Goals: 0-1 Schick (2'), 0-2 Werner (58'), 0-3 Mukiele (75')

Leipzig raced ahead after just over a minute with Schick volleying in his second of the season to finish a sweeping move that started with goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi and involved quick, intelligent touches from Werner and Konrad Laimer. Marcel Sabitzer sent a free header wide moments later with the hosts fortunate not to be two down within three minutes. The visitors continued to squander gilt-edged opportunities with Stefan Ilsanker scooping over the crossbar from just a handful of yards out and Schick heading wide from six yards. Dayot Upamecano missed not one, but two opportunities from close range, and Julian Nagelsmann's men were almost punished on the stroke of half-time when Dawid Kownacki's shot beat Gulacsi but came back off the inside of the post.

Werner had Zack Steffen at full stretch to push his effort away as Leipzig threatened another early goal in the second half. Kownacki duly headed Fortuna's riposte towards Gulacsi, but like his first-half effort, it was merely a drop in an ocean of Leipzig chances. When Kaan Ayhan was adjudged to have handled inside the area – the penalty given after consultation with VAR – and Werner shot past Steffen, a more realistic feel was given to the scoreline. Nagelsmann started to think ahead to Tuesday's trip to Borussia Dortmund, and Nordi Mukiele came on to give Lukas Klostermann a rest. It did not weaken Leipzig, though, and one of Mukiele's first touches was to head in his second goal of the season to make it 3-0 and allow Leipzig to conserve energy and move top of the standings, until Sunday afternoon at least.
