Freiburg beat Borussia Dortmund for the first time under Christian Streich despite 16-year-old Youssoufa Moukoko firing home his second Bundesliga goal for the visitors.
Freiburg 2-1 Borussia Dortmund
Goals: 1-0 Jeong (49'), 2-0 Schmid (52'), 2-1 Moukoko (76')
Streich was celebrating his 275th game in charge of Freiburg in their 700th Bundesliga game as a club. The Bundesliga's longest-serving had yet to taste victory over Dortmund, however, with that the goal in mind from the get-go with his attack-minded formation. It was the visitors who had the game's first chance, though, as Emre Can hit the crossbar with a left-footed strike from distance. In a frantic opening to the game, Wooyeong Jeong was proving the lynchpin in attack for Freiburg and his shot which was saved by Marwin Hitz should have been put home on the rebound by Ermedin Demirovic with just 10 minutes gone. Moments later and Florian Müller left Erling Haaland in disbelief after his miraculous save on his own goalline to keep out the Dortmund No.9's back-post slide from Gio Reyna's cross. Dortmund then began to take more control of the game with possession on their side, but they struggled to break down the Freiburg defence with Julian Brandt and Manuel Akanji both going for goal from range in anger before the half-time whistle took the sides in level at the break.
The second half started in some style for the home side with two goals in the opening seven minutes firing them in front. The first came from the powerful left foot of Jeong, the South Korean firing a shot past Hitz from all of 25 yards. Just three minutes later and the lead was doubled when Jonathan Schmid smashed a shot at goal from the corner of the Dortmund box and the ball squeezed between Hitz and the post. Moukoko came on on the hour mark with Edin Terzic looking to get his side back into the game, and it was almost the perfect introduction but his first shot at goal three minutes later struck the outside of the post. The teenager wasn't to be denied with his second attempt, though, as he fired past Müller having been played into the Freiburg penalty area by Haaland for his second Bundesliga goal. Dortmund continued to pile on the pressure in search of an equaliser, but Freiburg held on to claim all three points over Die Schwarzgelben for the first time under Streich to move to within two points of BVB in the table.
