Petersen strikes again as Freiburg and Frankfurt draw

Nils Petersen came off the bench to score his seventh goal of the season and help Freiburg earn a point in a 2-2 draw at home to Eintracht Frankfurt on Wednesday.

Freiburg 2-2 Eintracht Frankfurt
Goals: 0-1 Younes (6'), 1-1 Sallai (32'), 2-1 Petersen (63'), 2-2 Schlotterbeck (o.g. 75')

Fresh from winning their fourth consecutive game with a 3-1 victory over Schalke on Sunday, Frankfurt began with a spring in their step and put the home side under pressure from the outset. It swiftly paid off, as Amin Younes scored a wonderful opening goal in the sixth minute, skillfully turning his marker on the edge of the box before placing the ball past Florian Müller. Freiburg had won five matches on the bounce prior to their narrow defeat to Bayern Munich at the weekend, though, and grew in confidence as the match progressed. They deservedly equalised with 32 minutes on the clock when Ermedin Demirovic superbly rolled Evan N'Dicka before teeing up Roland Sallai to lash in his fifth goal of the season. Andre Silva had a powerful shot from a tight angle well saved by Müller, before Kevin Trapp made an excellent block from Christian Günter's deflected long-range strike at the other end.

Frankfurt brought on Daichi Kamada at half-time in a bid to swing momentum back their way, and it very nearly paid instant dividends when the Japan international collected Silva's cushioned pass, but he scuffed his shot wide from 10 yards within seconds of the restart. The Bundesliga's all-time greatest supersub showed him how it was done midway through the half, Petersen volleying in at the back post following a Günter free-kick for his 29th goal off the bench. Vincenzo Grifo had a chance to put daylight between the teams when he was allowed to drift in off the left, but his shot from 16 yards was straight at Trapp. It proved to be a decisive miss, as Frankfurt levelled the score shortly afterwards when Kevin Schlotterbeck bundled the ball into his own net as he tried to clear Kamada's speculative drive. Neither side was able to force a winner in the closing stages, leaving the league's two most in-form teams to settle for a point apiece.
