Germany's hopes of playing in next summer's UEFA Nations League finals were ended with defeat to Hungary in Leipzig.
Germany: ter Stegen - Hofmann, Süle, Rüdiger, Raum - Kimmich, Gündogan - Gnabry, Müller (c), Sane - Werner
Hungary: Gulacsi - Lang, Orban, At. Szalai - Fiola, Schäfer, Gazdag, Kerkez - Nagy, Szoboszlai - Ad. Szalai (c)
That's it! Flick's 13-game unbeaten run is over. Germany can no longer reach the final four, but Hungary can if they draw with Italy in their final outing. The only saving grace for the four-time world champions - who dominated the second half - is they cannot be relegated to League B. Monday's meeting with England is nothing more than a dead rubber, mind.
Five minutes for Germany to find the leveller needed to preserve their hopes of reaching the final four - and Flick's unbeaten record as head coach!
Szoboszlai was a real hive of activity in the first half, but he was unable to impact the game in the second 45. It's a shame Hungary won't be at the World Cup to showcase his talent.
Flick sends on Nmecha - an out-and-out striker - for the closing stages. Time to cut balls into the box!
Substitute Nmecha goes up to meet a cross, but doesn't make the desired connection. Kimmich swings a boot at the deflected ball, sending a daisy-cutter inches wide!
Suddenly Kleinheisler is in for Hungary. He only has ter Stegen to beat and has the time to pick his spot, but the Germany stand-in keeper makes himself big to save Germany's bacon.
Sane has the ball on the edge of the area as Musiala makes a burst into the Hungary box. It's the right idea, but Lang steps up to clear.
Musiala makes a nuisance of himself and pokes a ball through to Raum. Havertz tries to get a head on the ensuing cross, but it's cleared - albeit only as far as Kimmich. He drives goalwards from 18 yards, with Lang heading clear in front of the diving Gulacsi.
Adam bustles clear of Süle, before shooting low and hard across goal. Ter Stegen flies to his left to claw it away. Let-off for Germany, who've dominated since the restart.
A proverbial game changer, Musiala is on for the final 20 minutes or so. Havertz also gets the nod, the ex-Leverkusen prodigy offering more of a physical presence in the final third compared to the pace of Werner.
That's the end of Szalai's final senior away international. He's set to retire from international football at the end of the Nations League campaign. His brilliant goal remains the difference between the sides. Former Bremen and Darmstadt midfielder Kleinheisler is on.
Indicative of the confidence flowing through this Germany team, Kimmich has a crack from 25 yards. Gulacsi's beaten, but the ball hits the side netting. The supporters were already celebrating. Hungary just can't get out.
Germany asking all the questions as Werner combines with Sane. The Leipzig striker does really well to get his shot off under pressure, but Gulacsi makes the stop.
Hofmann collects a ball over the top from Gündogan and tees up Müller for a tidy finish, but the Gladbach man is rightly flagged for offside. Germany look a different side since the change in personnel.
Germany break down Hungary for the first time as Sane takes Gündogan's lofted pass into the box in his stride. The Bayern attacker catches the shot well, but Gulacsi gets down at his near post to block with his left foot.
Kehrer's on for Gnabry, who struggled to get into the game in the first half. Hofmann moves into his accustomed attacking midfield role.
Szalai's audacious goal is the difference between the sides in Leipzig. Hungary might even have had another, and will be through to the finals with a game to spare, unless Germany can turn this around...
Just the one minute to be played at the end of the regulation 45...
Germany's best and only chance of note. Sane shifts the ball out wide to Raum, who sends a first-time cross towards the far corner of the six-yard box. Müller gets up ahead of Kerkez, but his header lacks the power and precision to seriously trouble Gulacsi.
Rüdiger's on hand for the third time to clear a dangerous ball into the area - this one from Kerkez. Werner and Sane then try to work something on the edge of the Hungary area, but the red shirts do their job.
With Hungary players caught out of position following a corner, Germany can counter. Hofmann slips in Gnabry towards the right of the area, but a heavy first touch allows Kerkez to get a tackle in.
Germany try to build just over halfway with Sane, but Hungary swarm and win back possession. Soon as they regain possession, the Magyars look to counter. Incredible work rate!
The offside flag stays down as Fiola clips a left-wing cross towards the penalty spot. Gazdag meets it, but ter Stegen is out to block and prevent a certain goal.
Sign of Germany's frustrations as Kimmich cynically pulls back Szoboszlai. The Hungary and Leipzig man was just too quick for him.
Germany are behind to a goal made in the Bundesliga. Szoboszlai curls in a corner towards the near-post, where former Mainz and Schalke forward Adam Szalai sends a back-heeled volley into the opposite side of ter Stegen's goal. The keeper didn't move. Brilliant finish!
Germany only managed one shot on target in Budapest. Hungary's defensive wall is going to take some breaching, based on that and the early exchanges here.
Debutant left-back Kerkez goes on the outside of Hofmann and tries to pick out ex-Mainz man Adam Szalai, but Rüdiger's there again to head clear. Confident start from Hungary.
Hungary try to play out from the back, hounded by white-and-black shirts. Gnabry almost profits on a rushed clearance, but the ball cannons behind off his outstretched boot.
Germany concede the game's first corner. Szoboszlai plays it short, before collecting the ball once more and whipping over a cross that Rüdiger heads clear. Early warning for the hosts.
But not before a moment's reflection in memory of Hamburg legend and 72-time Germany international Uwe Seeler, who passed away in August, aged 85.
The teams are out, the anthems taken care of and kick-off is imminent.
Neuer and Gulacsi were among five goalkeepers on a joint-league-high 10 clean sheets in last term's Bundesliga. They're on two and one respectively after seven matches in 2022/23.
Hungary's Orban and Szoboszlai were among the goals a couple of weeks ago as Leipzig blew Dortmund away at today's venue, the Red Bull Arena. They're among 12 Bundesliga players to start the game.
"Hungary are smart tactically, they don't leave the opponents much room," opined Flick, who's unbeaten in 13 matches as Germany coach, winning four. "We've shown the team what needs to be done. Obviously we want to win the group and reach the final four. We've prepared well - it's down to us."
Germany are unbeaten in the current Nations League campaign, recording a record-breaking win over Italy and drawing their other three. If they beat Hungary and England in their final group game three days later, Hansi Flick's side are guaranteed to top the section and reach the four-nation finals. Müller has featured in all five fixtures so far, and was one of seven Bayern Munich players in the original 24-man squad. The youngest of the bunch at 18, Jamal Musiala is among the substitutes after top scoring for Bayern so far this season with four Bundesliga goals. Joshua Kimmich starts in midfield, but Borussia Dortmund captain Marco Reus had to withdraw after suffering an ankle ligament injury in the Revierderby. Skipper Manuel Neuer, Leon Goretzka and Julian Brandt also had to pull out, with Oliver Baumann and Maximilian Arnold given late call-ups as a result. One of 16 Bundesliga-based players left in the squad, Borussia Mönchengladbach's Jonas Hofmann - who hit a brace against RB Leipzig at the weekend - starts at right-back. Leipzig striker Timo Werner - the top scorer of the Flick era - is flanked by Serge Gnabry and Leroy Sane.
Werner scored two of five Germany goals against Italy last time out, but it was a Hofmann strike that denied Hungary all three points when the nations met in Budapest on Matchday 3. Although the Magyars lost their next game to Italy, two wins over England put them top of Group A3, a point ahead of Germany. Szoboszlai is one of three Leipzig players in their squad. The 21-year-old playmaker - who's started all three of Leipzig's games since Marco Rose's appointment as head coach - is joined by goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi and defender Willi Orban, but Freiburg winger Roland Sallai misses out with a fractured eye socket. Midfielder Andras Schäfer is involved, though, after playing his part for surprise Bundesliga table-toppers Union Berlin in recent weeks. He was among the goals as Hungary and Germany played out a 2-2 draw in the group stages of last summer's rescheduled UEFA 2020 Euros. The Magyars have recorded a handful of friendly wins over the four-time world champions down the years, but only one in competitive fare - at the 1954 FIFA World Cup. West Germany, though, got their revenge in the final.
