Leon GOAL-retzka sets up England tie

Leon Goretzka stepped off the bench to fire Germany into the UEFA Euro 2020 last 16 as Group F runners-up.

Leon Goretzka was the hero as Germany twice came from behind to draw with Hungary and set up a UEFA Euro 2020 last-16 tie with England.

Germany 2-2 Hungary
Goals: 0-1 Ad. Szalai (11'), 1-1 Havertz (66'), 1-2 Schäfer (68'), 2-2 Goretzka (84')

After thrashing Portugal 4-2 on Matchday 2, Germany knew they would advance so long as they avoided defeat at Munich's Allianz Arena. The three-time winners started brightly enough as Joshua Kimmich forced a reflex save from Peter Gulacsi, but Hungary hadn't read the script. A quick counter, spearheaded by the brilliant Roland Sallai, caught the hosts cold. The Freiburg attacker dropped off into space to whip a brilliant ball onto the head of Adam Szalai, whose stooping header blew Group F wide open. Germany responded as Gulacsi fended off a teasing Kai Havertz cross, before Mats Hummels crashed a header against the crossbar. Matthias Ginter went close moments later, but poked his close-range effort straight at Gulacsi.

Germany monopolised possession in the early stages of the season half, but news of France taking the lead against Portugal in Budapest suddenly had them crashing out. Sallai sent a free-kick against Manuel Neuer's upright, before Germany got themselves back on level terms. Gulacsi didn't deal with Toni Kroos' ball into the box, allowing Hummels to head goalwards, and Havertz to apply the finishing touch from close-range. Hungary's response was emphatic: from the restart, a long ball found Andras Schäfer, who beat Neuer to the punch and headed the Magyars back in front. Kroos shot wide as Germany threw the kitchen-sink, with their persistence rewarded six minutes from normal time. Substitutes Jamal Musiala, Timo Werner and Goretzka combined, the latter rifling in with the aid of a deflection to secure Joachim Löw's men the runners-up spot in Group F.

Brilliant from Toni Kroos. He feeds Gosens and continues his run into the area. The Madrid man takes on the return ball first time, but it's with the outside of his right foot and sails narrowly wide.

GORETZKA ON

Bayern's Leon Goretzka is on in place of Ilkay Gündogan. The 26-year-old made his return from a recurring thigh injury as a second-half substitute against Portugal, striking the bar soon after. With 16 goals and 20 assists in all competitions over the last two seasons, the leggy midfielder adds a welcome attacking dimension to Germany's game.

WIDE FOM RÜDIGER

Toni Kroos drops an inviting free-kick into the Hungary six-yard area. It just evades Mats Hummels, before Antonio Rüdiger heads wide at the far post. Difficult one - he saw it late and was under pressure from a white shirt.

vs

SZALAI-SALLAI THREAT

First sight of Hungary as an attacking unit as Mainz's Adam Szalai wins a corner. The short-corner routine doesn't quite deliver, but a raking pass from deep almost finds its way to Rolland Sallai in the Germany box. Had Mats Hummels not got a touch on the stretch, the Freiburg forward would have been in.

3'
vs

KIMMICH!

What a touch from Kimmich to control a long ball over the top of the Hungary defence. The angle's tight as the Bayern ace approaches the corner of the six-yard box, but he forces a smart save from Gulacsi, low to his right.
