Champions Bayern Munich maintain the traditional right to raise the curtain on the new campaign, although their new coach Julian Nagelsmann will have to wait a week longer before taking his pew in the Allianz Arena as the record champions instead travel to Borussia Mönchengladbach and their new coach Adi Hütter on 13 August.

The opening weekend also sees mouth-watering matches in Dortmund, where former Gladbach coach Marco Rose's first challenge comes against Eintracht Frankfurt, and in the capital, where Union Berlin will look to build on their remarkable 2020/21 campaign which culminated in qualification for the UEFA Europa Conference League with the visit of Bayer Leverkusen.

Julian Nagelsmann has to wait until Matchday 2 before his first Bundesliga game in charge of Bayern at home.

Promoted Bochum and Greuther Fürth both begin their Bundesliga campaigns on the road at Wolfsburg and VfB Stuttgart respectively, while Jesse Marsch's first fixture at the helm of RB Leipzig comes in Mainz.

The 2021 Supercup between the Bundesliga champions Bayern and DFB Cup winners Borussia Dortmund will be held at Signal Iduna Park on 17 August 2021, straight after the first round of Bundesliga matches, with Matchday 2 taking place on the weekend of 20-22 August, including Leverkusen's derby clash with Gladbach, Cologne's trip to Munich and Leipzig's first home game of the season against Stuttgart.

Before the Bundesliga pauses for its winter break on December 19, there will be three international breaks: the first coming after Matchday 3, the second after Matchday 7 and the third between Matchdays 11 and 12.

Other key dates for the diary are the first round of the DFB Cup on 6-9 August, the second round on 26/27 October and just the one Englische Woche – or midweek round of matches – Matchday 16 on 14/15 December.

Following a three-week winter break, Matchday 18 gets underway on 7 January 2022, with the season coming to its conclusion on 14 May, followed a week later by the DFB Cup final in Berlin and the play-off between the Bundesliga’s 16th-placed team and the side third in Bundesliga 2 on 19 and 23 May.
