Werner double as Leipzig down Hertha

Timo Werner scored twice as RB Leipzig came from behind to beat Hertha Berlin 4-2 on an historic day in the German capital.

Hertha Berlin 2-4 RB Leipzig
Goals: 1-0 Mittelstädt (32'), 1-1 Werner (38'), 1-2 Sabitzer (45'), 1-3 Kampl (86'), 1-4 Werner (90'+1), 2-4 Selke (90'+2)

Hertha and Leipzig players marked the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall by breaking through an artificial wall prior to game. Fittingly, it was an unstoppable hit from Maximilian Mittselstädt that gave the Berlin club the lead following a couple of Leipzig scares at the other end. Not even two Peter Gulacsis would have kept out the Hertha left-back's fierce strike, but Leipzig roared back and were level within six minutes. Karim Rekik was penalised for handling a Nordi Mukiele cross and, following a VAR review, Werner coolly sent Jarstein the wrong way from the spot. Hertha were flustered to say the least, and fell behind on the stroke of half-time when Marcel Sabitzer curled in Yussuf Poulsen's lay-off with the aid of a massive deflection off Rekik.

Knowing a third goal could spell curtains for their chances of getting anything from the game, Hertha came out fighting after the restart. The Old Lady enjoyed more possession for long spells, but struggled to break through Leipzig's well-drilled back line. When they did, the final ball was lacking. Werner carried Leipzig's biggest threat with a couple of teasing runs and crosses from wide positions, before substitute Christopher Nkunku sent a volley wide from a promising position at Jarstein's near-post. Leipzig played keep-ball for much of the remainder, and were rewarded with a pair of late goals from Kevin Kampl and the excellent Werner. Davie Selke's injury-time strike against his former club was scant consolation for Hertha.
