Burke enters the record books

Burke did so by becoming only the third Union player to score three goals in a single Bundesliga match, and the first to do it away from home. He's also the first Scottish player to score a hat-trick in the Germany's top flight.

It wasn't just his first competitive goals for Union that made Burke standout. He hit 20 mph (35.2 km/h) at his top speed, produced 24 sprints and five shots – three of those finding the back of the net. Frankfurt couldn't handle Burke's power and pace, with Andrej Ilić proving the perfect foil as he became the first Union player to provide three assists in a Bundesliga game.

"We were just in the flow, and I am glad that we could celebrate the victory now with the fans," beamed Burke after the final whistle. His coach, Steffen Baumgart, added: "Our complete game plan worked out today. We knew that Frankfurt are especially dominant in possession, but that we would get our chances in transition. We needed calm to take advantage of these opportunities – and Oliver showed that several times today."

The seven-goal thriller delivered the Bundesliga's highest-scoring match of the season so far and quietly slipped Burke into position next to fellow Brit Harry Kane as the only players to have scored hat-tricks in the German top flight this season.

For his whirlwind performance, Burke was named Player of the Match with an overwhelming 69 percent of the votes. Three goals, the fastest player on the pitch – it's little wonder.
