The history of the Supercup

The Supercup traditionally pits the Bundesliga champions against the DFB Cup holders to kick off the new season.
The Supercup traditionally pits the Bundesliga champions against the DFB Cup holders to kick off the new season.

The Supercup is the traditional curtain-raiser on the domestic season in Germany as the Bundesliga champions take on the DFB Cup holders.

The Supercup previously existed between 1987 and 1996, but was organised by the DFB (German FA). It was then replaced by the Ligapokal (League Cup) until the DFL re-introduced the Supercup in 2010.

The premise of the one-off match is to pit the Bundesliga champions against the DFB Cup holders from the previous season, making it one of the hardest competitions to qualify for. In the case that a team wins the domestic double, the Bundesliga runners-up are traditionally invited to take part.

The most successful team in the competition is Bayern Munich with 10 titles, while DFB Cup holders Leipzig - who defeated Bayern 3-0 to take home the Supercup in 2023 - are the 13th different club to compete for the prize.

Since the re-introduction of the Supercup, the game has gone straight to a penalty shootout in the event of a draw after 90 minutes. It has been decided on penalties five times in the past: Werder Bremen beat Bayer Leverkusen in 1993, Borussia Dortmund beat Kaiserslautern in 1996, Schalke beat Dortmund in 2011, Wolfsburg beat Bayern in 2015, and Bayern beat Dortmund in 2015. Leverkusen's defeat to Bremen in 1993 was the last time they competed for the trophy before this season, wile Stuttgart's last attempt to win it came in 2007, when they lost to Nuremberg.

Records for Rehhagel, Lewandowski and Müller

No coach has overseen more games in the Bundesliga than Otto Rehhagel (832). That is also true in the Supercup, which he has reached on five occasions. Four of those were with Bremen, and another one for Kaiserslautern. His team went on to lift the trophy three times.

The biggest win in Supercup history was Bayern’s 5-0 thrashing of Eintracht Frankfurt in August 2018. Robert Lewandowski bagged a hat-trick that day, helping him to a record seven goals in Supercups.

Lewandowski is second to ex-Bayern teammate Thomas Müller as the player with the most Supercup appearances. Lewandowski featured eight times for Bayern and three with Dortmund, while Müller has made his 12 all in the red of the record champions.

Every Supercup since the re-introduction in 2010 was sold out prior to 2020 and the COVID-19 pandemic. Restrictions meant that the 2020 edition was played behind closed doors, while there was a limited crowd in 2021. However, the 2022 and 2023 editions, at Leipzig’s Red Bull Arena and Bayern’s Allianz Arena respectively, were both sold out.

Kaiserslautern and Werder Bremen were the Bundesliga and DFB Cup holders respectively. Hansa Rostock had won the double in the final East German season, so East German Cup runners-up Stahl Eisenhüttenstadt were added for the semi-finals.
