Injured Reyna "will be world class" - Rose

Gio Reyna's injury nightmare continued on Friday, the young American limped off just two minutes into Borussia Dortmund's 2-0 win at VfB Stuttgart and will miss the remainder of the campaign, but coach Marco Rose thinks it's simply a bump in the road.

The 19-year-old Reyna made just his sixth start of the season at Stuttgart's Mercedes-Benz Arena on Friday but went off in tears after pulling up early on, with his replacement Julian Brandt then grabbing both goals in the 2-0 victory.

It has now been confirmed that Reyna will miss the remainder of the campaign  after suffering another hamstring injury, but Rose is adamant that his teenaged star will come back even better despite his latest setback.

"Gio will be a world class player," Rose assured, speaking to bundesliga.com after the game. "He's a top lad with unbelievable qualities. We'll help him to get properly back on his feet."

Reyna previously exploded onto the Bundesliga scene in 2019, and last season helped himself to seven goals and eight assists in all competitions as Dortmund finished third in the Bundesliga and lifted the DFB Cup.

The 2021/22 campaign has been stop-start for the Sunderland-born New Yorker, though, with recurring hamstring injuries and illness restricting him to just 10 of a possible 29 appearances in the Bundesliga.
