Kai Havertz scored, but Bayer Leverkusen lost 2-1 to Inter Milan with Nicolo Barella (r.) opening the scoring for the Italians.

Kai Havertz was on target for Bayer Leverkusen but Inter Milan edged the tie 2-1.

AS IT HAPPENED

Inter Milan 2-1 Bayer Leverkusen
Goals: 1-0
Barella (15'), 2-0 Lukaku (21'), 2-1 Havertz (24')

FULL-TIME: 2-1

90+7' YELLOW CARD: BARELLA
Still a minute to go, after Barella is booked.

90+2' PENALTY NOT GIVEN (VAR CHECK)
For the second time, the referee changes his original decision and Inter do not have a penalty. Lukaku stands down from the penalty spot again. Meanwhile, Sanchez has returned to the field, but he is clearly struggling.

90+2' SIX MINUTES OF STOPPAGE TIME
While VAR checks the penalty, there will be six minutes of stoppage time added. That will start from when the action recommences, which might be a while yet.

90' PENALTY GIVEN FOR INTER
Barella and Eriksen both go down in the area, and the referee says one is a foul - penalty for Inter.

88' INTER DOWN TO TEN MEN
Alexis Sanchez has limped off and his game appears to be over. With all Inter's substitutions made already, they will have to play the final few minutes with ten men if he cannot return.

87' YELLOW CARD: TAPSOBA
Tapsoba's name is the next in the referee's book, but unfortunately for Leverkusen, not denoting a goal.

85' YELLOW CARD: ERIKSEN
Inter's Danish midfielder goes in on the back of Havertz's ankle, and subsequently into the book. Meanwhile, Leverkusen make their final changes of regular time with Alario on for Volland, and Bellarabi replacing Bender - another sign that it's going to be all-out attack from them now.

84' FINAL CHANGE FOR INTER
Skriniar replaces Bastoni for Inter, which is their last substitution - unless this goes to extra-time, win which case Antonio Conte gets another change.

79' HAVERTZ SO CLOSE!!
Was that an inch, or a centimetre? Either way, it was so close for Havertz, who was a toe nail away from meeting a cross and either putting it in, or helping it into the path of Volland. Leverkusen now have just over ten minutes to rescue their European season, and you can sense the urgency in their game.

76' MOSES DENIED
Another good chance for Inter, with Moses cutting in from the right and taking aim. Hradecky is right in the ball's trajectory and makes the save. Meanwhile, Bender has returned to the field and, albeit gingerly, is still involved in the game.

74' MORE BAD NEWS FOR BENDER
If it doesn't rain, it pours: one Bender, Sven, has already limped off, and his twin brother Lars has just limped off too.

68' LEVERKUSEN CHANGES
Wendell comes on for Sinkgraven and Amiri replaces Baumgartlinger.

66' SANCHEZ GOES CLOSE!
Almost an immediate impact from Sanchez, but his shot is saved by Hradecky's leg. Leverkusen having to throw caution to the wind now, and just hope they do not concede another as they push for an equaliser.

64' SANCHEZ FOR MARTINEZ
Inter make their third change of the night, with Alexis Sanchez coming on for Lautaro Martinez.

61' DANGEROUS DEMIRBAY!
Big chance for Leverkusen, with Demirbay pulling a fine save out of Handanovic with a blistering shot from just outside the area. It's a corner for an improving Leverkusen.

59' BAILEY'S TURN
Bailey comes on for Palacios in the first change for Leverkusen. Inter make two subs, with Eriksen and Moses on for D'Ambrosio and Gagliardini.

58' NO TAKERS FROM DEMIRBAY!
An excellent run from Demirbay into the penalty area, but his tempting cross does not find a man in a red shirt!

54' GAGLIARDINI GOES CLOSE AGAIN!
Gagliardini picks up the ball in his own half, but he manages to get into the Leverkusen area unchallenged before Tapsoba deflects his shot wide.

52' DIABY OFF TARGET
Diaby dribbles his way through, and he goes on and on, but the final product is wayward. At the other end, Hradecky pushes a Martinez cross away from the onrushing Lukaku. End-to-end stuff now!

50' GAGLIARDINI SHOT BLOCKED!
Leverkusen have Lukaku to thank for getting in the way of Gagliardini's goalbound strike, and preventing him from doubling Inter's lead!

48' YELLOW CARD: BENDER
Not the best of nights for the Bender twins: Sven pulls up with an injury before kick-off, and now Lars is shown a yellow card.

47' PROMISING START FROM LEVERKUSEN
Leverkusen have gone straight onto the attack in this second half. With no second leg to this quarter-final tie, they have no other choice but to go for it.

KICK-OFF!
The second half has started. No changes have been made, but will the scoreline change soon in Leverkusen's favour?

TEAMS EMERGING
The second half is about to get underway in Düsseldorf, with the teams back out.

HALF-TIME: 2-1
Just one goal in it at the break, which is a good result for Leverkusen considering the start Inter made to the game. 45 minutes now for Leverkusen to get back on terms, and plenty of positives in the second portion of that first half for them to believe they can.

45' DEMIRBAY BLOCKED
Demirbay has a shot blocked, with the ball looping behind for a corner as we enter into the one and only minute of additional time.

43' YELLOW CARD: SINKGRAVEN
Leverkusen's full-back has been busy tonight, and now his name is in the referee's book for a foul on Barella.

40' INTER ATTACK
Martinez and Lukaku exchange passes and drag Tah and Tapsoba out of position, but the latter does well to get to Martinez's cross before the Belgian, and turn the ball behind for a corner.

33' LEVERKUSEN FREE-KICK
The ball heads into the danger area, but it leaves a trail of players on the floor as nobody could reach it. Leverkusen are now starting to pick up the pace.

32' YELLOW CARD: D'AMBROSIO
Inevitable yellow card for the Inter full-back, who stops Diaby's charge with a professional foul. Free-kick in a dangerous position for Leverkusen.

28' NO PENALTY! (VAR CHECK)
The referee has a look and deems Sinkgraven was trying to get his arm out of the way of the ball's path, and overturns his decision!

26' PENALTY TO INTER!
Sinkgraven handles the ball in the area, and the referee points to the spot. VAR is checking it...

24' HAVERTZ GOAL
And there it is! Leverkusen are back in the game! Havertz beats the offside trap, and his shot also beats Handanovic, even though the Slovenian keeper nearly keeps it out. Game on!

24' DIABY BLOCKED
That's more like it from Leverkusen! Diaby gets into the area and has a shot blocked - a positive sign from Die Werkself!

23' LUKAKU CLOSE
That could have been a third for Inter. Lukaku breaks through and brings a sensational save out of Hradecky, who might just have kept Leverkusen in the game.

21' GOAL FOR INTER: 2-0
Lukaku doubles Inter's lead. He receives the ball with his back to goal, but manages to hold off Tapsoba and, while falling to the ground, is still able to turn it past Hradecky.

20' BARELLA BRACE BLOCKED!
It was nearly two goals for Inter, and two for Barella. Martinez got in around the back of the Leverkusen defence and pulled it back for Barella, but his shot is blocked.

15' GOAL FOR INTER: 1-0
It was just a false dawn for Leverkusen, as Inter go up the other end of the field and take the lead. Lukaku cannot find a way through, but the ball bounces out for Nicolo Barella, who curls it into the bottom corner with the outside of his boot. 1-0 to Inter.

14' FIRST OPENING FOR LEVERKUSEN
Havertz slips a ball through for Volland, but he is always going away from goal and cannot get his boot around the ball to cut it back towards goal.

12' LEVERKUSEN ON THE BACK FOOT
Although they have not had any major danger to deal with, Leverkusen have spent much of the opening ten minutes defending. The pace of the game is still quite low, however, with the heat in Düsseldorf not helping in that department.

5' TAH AND TAPSOBA SETTLING
Lautaro Martinez is trying to take advantage of any misunderstandings between Leverkusen's central defenders, but they're dealing with him well.

EARLY INTER CHANCE
A mistake by Sinkgraven gifts Lukaku the ball just outside the area, but the Leverkusen defender recovers to block the Inter striker's shot. Just 19 seconds on the clock!

KICK-OFF!
We-re underway in Düsseldorf

TEAMS OUT
After the referees, then Inter came out, it was the turn of Leverkusen to take to the field. We're nearly ready for kick-off!

Kick-off -15'
BREAKING: Jonathan Tah is going to start for Leverkusen instead of Bender!

Kick-off -15'
Sven Bender has left the warm-up with what looks like an injury. Could there be a last-minute change to the starting XI for Peter Bosz?

Kick-off -75'
