Former Schalke, Borussia Dortmund and Germany goalkeeper Jens Lehmann has made a surprise return to the Bundesliga after agreeing to join Augsburg as assistant coach to Manuel Baum.

The 49-year-old, who also had stints at VfB Stuttgart, Arsenal and AC Milan during his playing days, has signed a contract valid until 30 June 2020.

"Augsburg have developed impressively over the last few years, even if things aren't going as they'd like on the pitch at the moment," said Lehmann. "It's a great opportunity for me to work as an assistant coach in the Bundesliga and to help the players perform as well as possible as a team."

Augsburg slipped to a 2-0 defeat away to Borussia Mönchengladbach on Matchday 19, a result that kept them in 15th place in the standings, just a point above the relegation play-off spot.

The role as assistant coach is not an entirely new one for Lehmann, who performed a similar function at Arsenal under former coach Arsene Wenger in 2017/18.

"I'm delighted that we could bring Jens in as assistant," said Baum of his new colleague. "He's an absolute expert and has a lot of experience. I'm looking forward to working with him and I'm sure he'll be an asset to our team."
