Jesse Marsch will rejoin RB Leipzig as head coach, replacing Bayern Munich-bound Julian Nagelsmann in the role on a two-year contract until 2023.
Marsch, 47, worked as assistant coach to former Leipzig chief Ralf Rangnick in 2018/19, before moving to Austria to take charge of the Red Bull Salzburg senior team.
"With Jesse Marsch we were able to sign our dream candidate as the new head coach and quickly fill the most important position in the sporting realm at RB Leipzig with a top coach," said club CEO Oliver Mintzlaff.
"Jesse has done an excellent job in all of his previous positions and has developed step by step. It's naturally a great advantage that he has already worked for RB Leipzig for a year. Jesse knows the club, the city of Leipzig and above all our club and game philosophy."
After leaving Leipzig, Marsch led Salzburg to an Austrian Bundesliga-Cup double in his first season at the helm, and is on course to repeat the feat in 2020/21.
The former USMNT midfielder - who spent the majority of his career as a player in Major League Soccer - has also coached Canada's Montreal Impact (2011-2012) and US outfit New York Red Bulls (2015-2018).
Marsch becomes the third American national to be named first-team coach of a Bundesliga club after current VfB Stuttgart boss Pellegrino Matarazzo and ex-Schalke man David Wagner.
