The 19-year-old sat down with bundesliga.com ahead of the match at the Allianz Arena to discuss…
…Gladbach’s start to the season: “I don’t think we could have drawn it up any better. Seven points, that’s a great start for us. The coach was telling us it’s tied for the best start in Borussia history, I believe, so we’re in a great place right now. It gives us confidence, and we’re just going to keep going.”
…the changes new head coach Daniel Farke has made: “Right off the bat you could see the formation - we used to play three in the back, now it’s four. We like to build up with a lot of players in the centre to overload the middle, and basically bring it out from there and play high, nice attacking soccer.”
…improving defensively from last season: “We’ve been working on it, we’ve been working on staying compact. A lot of the chances last year came from crosses, so we’ve been working on that a lot, and in the first three games you can really tell we’ve been building on it. Like our last game against Hertha, we kept a shutout and won 1-0. That’s what’s going to win us games, getting clean sheets.”
…Gladbach’s goals for this season: “I’ve always said that Borussia deserve to be playing European football, so that’s always the goal and that’ll be our goal this year again.”

…Saturday’s game against Bayern: “This is a game that every player lives for. This is the biggest game of the season for us. It’s first against second - I mean, it’s crazy now. It’ll be the fourth game of the season. If we can get out, get a good start in this game, I think the season will be set up perfectly for us. We’ve had a good couple of games against them, so we hope to keep going.”
…beating Bayern 5-0 last season: “This is a game that I don’t think any of us will forget in our lives. Winning 5-0 against them at home in the DFB Cup, it was something special. The fans were into it, we were all into it. We were in a tough time at that time when we won, so that was great for us and we’ll never forget it.”
… Gladbach’s good record against Bayern: “It’s tough for me, I’ve only played here one season! I’m sure the older guys who have played them more times know why, but for me, it’s just that we’re all worked up for this game, we’re ready for it and it’s the biggest game of our lives for some of us. So
…potentially going to the World Cup: “I hope so. I hope if I keep putting in good performances and I keep getting minutes, then it’s enough to get me there. I had a good showing in the camp in the summer. I hope so, that’s another dream of every player, definitely of mine, to be in a World Cup, so I hope it’s this year.”
…what the USA can achieve at the World Cup: “Of course we want to make it out of the group. I see the coach says a lot that it’s two separate tournaments: one is the group stage and then after the group stage anything could happen. Our goal is to make it out of the group, and then we’ll see where we can go.”
