Nagelsmann appointed Germany coach

Six months after leaving Bayern Munich, Julian Nagelsmann will now lead Germany into Euro 2024.

The former Hoffenheim, RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich coach is to take charge of the Germany national team heading into next summer's UEFA Euro 2024 on home soil.

Nagelsmann has agreed to lead Germany into next summer's European Championship on home soil following the departure of Hansi Flick earlier in September, signing a contract until 31 July 2024. His assistants will be Sandro Wagner and Benjamin Glück.

"We have a European Championship in our own country. That's something special, something that only comes around every few decades," said Nagelsmann, who is the 12th person to be Germany manager. "I'm really up for taking on this challenge. The display in Dortmund [against France] was the start. We'll become a band of brothers over the next year."

DFB sporting director Rudi Völler added: "Julian was our desired candidate from the start. He isn't just an absolute footballing man but has already proven at all his clubs - at a very young age for a head coach - that he can motivate a team and the entire surroundings.

"His fire for football is palpable and contagious. Julian will contribute at a key point with his qualities and character that we have a great Euros in our own country in the summer."

Nagelsmann became the youngest permanent head coach in Bundesliga history when he took over at Hoffenheim in February 2016 aged only 28. During his 136 games in charge, he took the Sinsheimers from the verge of relegation and into the UEFA Champions League for the first time ever. The Landsberg am Lech native helped revolutionise the club, including the addition of a giant screen on the training ground to help aid tactical practice.

In summer 2019, he took the reins at Leipzig and made yet more history by guiding Die Roten Bullen into the Champions League semi-finals in 2019/20 and then the DFB Cup final for the second time the following season.

The move to Bayern followed for the 2021/22 season, where he guided the record champions to their 10th straight title and the first major silverware of his senior coaching career, having previously led Hoffenheim's U19s to the national title in 2013/14.

Nagelsmann was dismissed in March 2023 after 84 matches in charge and averaging 2.31 points per game, being replaced by Thomas Tuchel, who had given him his first break in coaching while a scout with Augsburg's second team in 2008.

His first games in charge of Germany are friendly matches in October against the USA and Mexico. The first competitive fixture will be the opening match of Euro 2024 at Bayern's Allianz Arena on 14 June 2024.
