Nagelsmann: "I'm certain we'll have a good season"

Julian Nagelsmann wants to win a title with RB Leipzig within four years.

New RB Leipzig head coach Julian Nagelsmann is confident his side can continue their fine start to the 2019/20 campaign and make a success of the season.

Die Roten Bullen are the only team in the Bundesliga to have taken maximum points from all three league games so far, having beaten Union Berlin, Eintracht Frankfurt and Borussia Mönchengladbach to sit top of the league standings, two points clear of Bayern Munich in second place.

Nagelsmann's charges are also in the second round of the DFB Cup and are about to begin their UEFA Champions League Group G campaign, giving the side three potential pieces of silverware to win this term.

And the 32-year-old, who became the Bundesliga's youngest-ever permanent head coach when he took charge of Hoffenheim in 2016 at the age of 28, insists he is not looking to radically overhaul the playing style that enabled Leipzig to finish third in the Bundesliga in 2018/19.

Watch: Nagelsmann brewing a Bundesliga storm with Leipzig

"It's not about replacing anything or developing something completey new; it's more about adding a couple of things on top with a bit of time," he told bundesliga.com in an exclusive interview.

"It's about implementing a couple of ideas in order to continue to be successful or take another couple of steps forward."

And while Nagelsmann may be young, he is unafraid to own up to past mistakes in a bid to learn and improve in the future, talking openly about Hoffenheim's ultimately disappointing efforts in the Champions League last season, where they finished bottom of Group F with three points from six games.

"Last year in Hoffeheim we had a very attack-minded squad, but not too many defensive-minded players," he said.

"In games against the top Champions League teams, we were able to play attractive football but we didn't get the results we wanted because the balance between defenders and attackers wasn't right. It was like we had 70 per cent attackers and 30 per cent defenders. That was great for the fans, but not for our results."

Watch: Timo Werner under the tactical microscope

There is certainly no arguing with Leipzig's results so far this season: four competitive matches, four wins, 12 goals scored, four conceded. Meanwhile, star striker Timo Werner signed a contract extension and has been on fire, scoring five goals in three league games thus far.

That record will face a particularly trying test on Matchday 4 when Leipzig welcome Bayern to the Red Bull Arena in an eagerly awaited top-of-the-table clash, but regardless of the outcome Nagelsmann is confident his side have what it takes to be successful in 2019/20.

"I'm certain we'll have a good season," he said. "I don't now if it'll be enough to win the title. With Kloppo [Jürgen Klopp] it took three years [for him to win something] in Dortmund and in Liverpool.

"We'd all be happy if we could win something in three years. We'd obviously have nothing against it happening sooner, but four years would also be OK. It would be great if we could achieve it. That's our aim."
