Jürgen Klinsmann has stepped down as Hertha Berlin head coach and wants to resume his position on the club’s supervisory board.

The former Bayern Munich, Germany and USA coach took over at Hertha in November following the dismissal of Ante Covic.

The 55-year-old oversaw 10 matches, including one in the DFB Cup round of 16, winning three and losing four. During that time, he’s taken the capital club from level on points with Fortuna Düsseldorf in the relegation play-off position to six points clear of 16th.

“After long consideration, I’ve come to the decision to give up my position as head coach and return to my original long-term role on the supervisory board,” Klinsmann wrote on his Facebook page in an open letter to Hertha fans.

“In November, we agreed to the club’s wish to help out in a difficult time with a highly competent team,” he continued.

“We were progressing really well in a relatively short period of time and have managed to put six points between us and the play-off spot, despite difficult games, thanks to the support of many people. I’m convinced Hertha will achieve its goal of remaining in the Bundesliga.”

Klinsmann had been appointed to the club’s board earlier in November before taking over as head coach.

Hertha’s next game is away at Paderborn on Saturday, with the FIFA World Cup-winning striker's assistant Alexander Nouri taking charge of that match.
