Lucas Hernandez: "Always my goal to find my spot at Bayern"

Lucas Hernandez joined Bayern Munich in 2019, but injury has restricted him to 78 games in all competitions.

Following Saturday’s enthralling victory in Der Klassiker, Bayern Munich defender Lucas Hernandez reflects on the obstacles he’s had to overcome since arriving to the Allianz Arena and what the team can push for this season.

"I feel good, ready and motivated, like the rest of my teammates," Hernandez told Kicker. "We're eager to write history and win trophies. The motivation within the team is huge to win as many titles as possible.

“For me the most important thing is to keep a clean sheet. I hate losing. Defeats stay with me even at home.”

After missing the first three Bundesliga matchdays this season with injury, Hernandez has played every game since. Bayern go into Matchday 15 with a four-point advantage as they seek a 10th consecutive Bundesliga title.

“I like to play as left centre-back. That's my ideal position where I always played in my youth. With Hansi Flick I played both left-back and centre-back. With Julian Nagelsmann, I always play left centre-back. I feel most comfortable there.”

Since his move in 2019 from Atletico Madrid to Bayern, the Frenchman is clear that he made the right decision to switch.

“Yes. I think the club helped me develop both as a player and as a person.

"Football in Germany is more physical and intensive. That suits me. In Spain, it's about technique, there's more possession and more passes. In Germany, the games are end to end. You have to run more."

Hernandez is bidding to get his hands on the Bundesliga title for the third season in a row.

And would he ever think about departing the Bundesliga leaders in the near future?

“Never, not one single time, even in the toughest moments,” he said. “My goal always was to find my spot here. That's why I signed here.

"The club made big efforts to sign me. That shows they were fully convinced of me. But I couldn't do anything about the fee. My job is to help the team win as many titles as possible. That's why I play football."
