Voglsammer rescues draw for Bielefeld in Mainz

Andreas Voglsammer scored to cancel out Daniel Brosinski's penalty as Arminia Bielefeld battled back to earn a share of the points with a 1-1 draw against Mainz at their Opel Arena.

Goals: 1-0 Brosinski (pen. 56'), 1-1 Voglsammer (76')

Mainz began the day in 15th, two places and points better off than Bielefeld, and they were inches away from extending their advantage over their visitors early on. Jean-Paul Boëtius would have made it 1-0 if he had connected with Jonathan Burkardt's flick on from point-blank range, and Leandro Barreiro's subsequent attempt was cleared off the line by Anderson Lucoqui. Stefan Ortega then added to his league-leading 113 shots saved this season, keeping out Barreiro one again when the Luxembourger was clean through on goal. Masaya Okugawa tried an ambitious volley from distance which flew way over Robin Zentner's crossbar, but most of the first-half traffic flowed in Mainz's favour, and Bielefeld were the more relieved to hear Deniz Aytekin's half-time whistle.

Mainz thought they should have had a penalty soon after the restart when Mike van der Hoorn made contact with Burkardt, but their claims were waved away after Aytekin's consultation with VAR. The Germany U21 forward did draw a spot-kick from the big Dutchman soon after, though, and Brosinski stepped up to convert his eighth penalty in as many attempts for the 05ers. Bielefeld, to their credit, never let their heads go down, though, and Voglsammer got them back on level terms with 15 minutes to go, firing home at the second attempt after his free-kick had cannoned back off the Mainz wall. The hosts nonetheless climb a place to 14th with the draw, with Bielefeld still in the bottom two.
