Bundesliga
Bayern Munich missed the chance to seal a ninth successive Bundesliga title, after falling to a shock 2-1 defeat in Mainz.
Mainz 2-1 Bayern Munich
Goals: 1-0 Burkardt (3'), 2-0 Quaison (37'), 2-1 Lewandowski (90'+4)
Benjamin Pavard attempted to get the title party started inside two minutes with a vicious long-range hit that whistled just wide, but Mainz hadn't read the script. All over the record champions like a rash, the 05ers forged ahead when Jonathan Burkardt's vicious swerving shot deceived Manuel Neuer on its way into the net. Neuer atoned with a fabulous reflex save to push Danny Latza's deflected header onto the woodwork, before throwing up a steel-like wrist to thwart Robin Quaison soon after. Bayern's best chance sandwiched those two openings, but the returning Robert Lewandowski - back from a five-game absence - spooned over from 15 yards. A bad first half got worse for the visitors when Quaison headed home Phillip Mwene's left-wing free-kick with 37 minutes on the clock.
Hansi Flick shuffled his back for the start of the second half, with Tanguy Nianzou, Jamal Musiala and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting entering the fray. Musiala - on in place of Leroy Sane - was involved almost immediately, but Lewandowski was hounded by three red shirts and was unable to do anything of note with the cross. That pretty much summed up Bayern's day as Mainz succeeded in keeping the record champions at arm's length for the majority of the second period. Robin Zentner was eventually made to work by Choupo-Moting, who placed a couple of half chances straight at the Mainz goalkeeper, before Lewandowski netted an injury-time consolation - his 36th Bundesliga goal of the season - following a mistake by Alexander Hack. Bayern still have a trio of games left to get the three points they need to wrap up the title - unless RB Leipzig slip up against VfB Stuttgart on Sunday - while Mainz pull five points clear of the relegation play-off spot.
