Petersen overtakes Löw as Freiburg's record scorer in win at Mainz

Alexander Schwolow was back in the Freiburg goal in place of Mark Flekken after overcoming a torn thigh muscle, and Levin Öztunali made sure the visiting keeper was warmed up early on, cutting inside and stinging his gloves. Unlike his Black Forest teammate, Luca Waldschmidt remained sidelined for this game and Kwon - playing in his place - had a good chance at the other end when he flashed wide of Robin Zentner's far post. Ridle Baku then tested Schwolow before Jean-Philippe Mateta, making his first start of the season for Mainz, fired what should have been the opener against the stopper's legs. The hosts' profligacy was punished by Freiburg soon after when Petersen crossed for Kwon, who finished with aplomb. Mateta might have drawn Mainz level on the half-hour, but there was just too much on Robin Quaison's shot-turned-cross for the Frenchman to connect, and Petersen turned taker towards the end of the half, reacting quickest to Manuel Gulde's deflected finish to make it 2-0.

Mainz coach Achim Beierlorzer sent striker Karim Onisiwo on for midfielder Baku at the start of the second half, the striker up against his favourite opponents in the Bundesliga having scored three against them previously. Freiburg remained in the ascendancy, however, and Kwon was just a Moussa Niakhate goal-line clearance away from making it 3-0 before the hour was out. Freiburg captain Christian Günter then fizzed a shot wide of the far post as the hosts held on. Jonathan Schmid drilled a low shot into Zentner's legs before Mateta pulled one back, getting the break of the ball in the Freiburg box to nod home his first goal since May. Zentner spent much of the final few minutes in the opposition box as Mainz threw everything but the kitchen sink at getting an equaliser, but it proved to be too little too late for the hosts and Freiburg held on for the 2-1 win that sends them a provisional sixth.

• Petersen became Freiburg's record goalscorer, his eighth goal of the season taking him to 84 overall - one more than Germany coach Löw managed in his three spells with the club.
• Kwon, making just his second start for Freiburg, scored his second goal for Christian Streich's side following his summer transfer from French outfit Dijon.
• Freiburg are enjoying their best season for seven years (29 points from 18 matches), thanks in no small part to their away tally of 15 points - already one more than in the whole of last season.
• Mainz have now suffered a club record 12 defeats after 18 games of a Bundesliga season.
• Mateta's goal was second in his four matches back from injury.
• This was the 05ers first even home defeat to Freiburg. They had won the seven of the previous 10, drawing the other three.
