Bebou earns 10-man Hoffenheim a point at Mainz

Having ended their eight-game winless start to the season last weekend, Mainz welcomed a Hoffenheim side who had failed to claim victory in their last six Bundesliga outings. The home side's gameplan was clear from the get-go as they sat in deep to absorb the Hoffenheim pressure before breaking on the counter-attack. The plan quickly brought results for the hosts, with Jean-Philippe Mateta bringing a stunning save out of Oliver Baumann to deny his header inside 10 minutes. The Frenchman then fired wide from in front of goal with a chance he will feel he should have done better with. Stefan Posch had the first opportunity at the other end, forcing Robin Zentner into action with his near-post header. Mainz continued to look dangerous on the counter-attack, though, and provided the opener shortly after the half-hour mark. Mateta's backheel sent Jean-Paul Boetius into the penalty area and his pass across goal was tapped home by Quaison. Hoffenheim had a pair of chances to level the scores before the break but Bebou was denied by Zentner before Dennis Geiger had his shot cleared off the line by Alexander Hack.

The visitors stayed in control of possession into the second half with Mainz looking to defend their slender lead. Robert Skov came on just nine minutes after the break and his introduction opened up the Mainz defence with a change of tack. Andrej Kramaric found Ryan Sessegnon in space on the left to then cross low into the box with a first-time ball which Bebou placed home from close range. The game opened up once again from that point on and Mainz almost took the lead again, but Baumann won a goal-mouth scramble after a corner. Mateta had the game's next big chance as he broke down the right and beat Kasim Adams to the ball, but had to watch his low shot across goal come back out off the post. Geiger was shown a straight red card with 10 minutes to play after he intentionally brought Karim Onisiwo down on a counter-attack. Jonathan Burkardt went closest to a late winner for the home side but Mainz could not beat Baumann for a second time as they earned their fourth point from their last two games.

• After picking up just one point from their opening seven games, Mainz have now claimed four points from their last two games. Each of Quaison's last four Bundesliga goals have all opened the scoring in matches at home.
• The Sweden international scored his second goal of the campaign with only his sixth shot on goal.
• Ryan Sessegnon added to his first Bundesliga goal with his first shot taken in Germany's top flight last week by providing his first assist against Mainz.
• Bebou hit his first goal of the season. Each of his last six goals for Hoffenheim all came in wins.
• Hoffenheim are now winless in their last seven Bundesliga games.
