Borussia Mönchengladbach bowed out of the UEFA Champions League after a 4-0 aggregate loss to Manchester City.
CONFIRMED line-ups
Man City: Ederson - Walker, Stones, Dias, Cancelo - Gündogan, Rodri, Silva - Mahrez, De Bruyne (c), Foden
Gladbach: Sommer - Lainer, Ginter, Elvedi, Bensebaini - Zakaria, Neuhaus - Hofmann, Stindl (c), Thuram – Embolo
As it happened
Mahrez jinks this way then that on the right-hand edge of the Gladbach box to fashion a pocket of space for a shot. He curls a shot towards the far post, but gets his angles all wrong and it's way off target.
This is Gladbach's best move of the match as they shift the ball forward quickly, from right to left. Plea ends up slipping a pass into Traore's run behind the defence, and although he gets a shot away it's well wide of the far post.
Gladbach captain Stindl is taken off for a breather, perhaps with an eye on keeping him fresh for Saturday's game away to Schalke.
City defend a cross into the box, but only as far as Wolf, just outside the area. He controls it on his right and immediately gets a shot away on his left, but it's always rising and fizzes just over.
The Argentinian forward takes to the pitch for Silva.
Some intricate passing from City ends with Sterling touching the ball back to Foden on the edge of the box. He gets a shot away but it's blocked by a defender before Sommer needs to intervene.
Two more subs for City: Sterling for Gündogan and Laporte for Diaz.
Sommer is alert again to keep out a fierce effort from Mahrez.
Marco Rose also brings on some fresh legs as Plea and Wolf replace Thuram and Embolo in attack for Gladbach.
City make their first substitutions of the game, as Fernandinho comes on for Rodri and Zinchenko for Cancelo.
De Bruyne fizzes in a free-kick from the left, sending it across the six-yard box, but Sommer watches it all the way and comes off his line to collect.
Hofmann swings in a corner from the left, which is chested down by Thuram on the edge of the six-yard box. It almost falls kindly to Bensebaini, but Diaz just nips in ahead to clear the danger.
A nice break forward from City as De Bruyne releases Mahrez down the right wing. He cuts back on to his left foot and floats a cross towards the back post, but Lainer watches it all the way and is able to head clear.
The Foals get forward well, playing their way around City's press, with some nice one-touch passing from Bensebaini, Thuram and Stindl. It's spread wide to Lainer on the right, but his first touch lets him down and City are able to recover possession.
A lovely slide-rule pass between two defenders from Gündogan and all of a sudden, Mahrez is racing through on goal. He has to check his run slightly, giving Elvedi the fraction of a second he needs to get back and distract the City attacker, who ends up firing wide of the post from 16 yards.
No changes from either side at the break.
A great through ball from Thuram into the run of Embolo in the box. He flashes an effort across goal looking for the far post. Ederson is rooted to the spot and breathes a sigh of relief as the ball flies wide.
De Bruyne hits a free-kick from about 25 yards out and central. The shot is simple enough for Sommer to tip over the crossbar.
That's much better by the Foals as they gallop through the centre of this City team, playing just a couple of passes to get it up to Thuram, who cuts inside onto his right and looks for the far corner. Too close to Ederson, though.
Another ball up into the box with Gündogan the target running in behind. He can't quite control it though with his chest/shoulder and Sommer forces him wide.
Gladbach now need four goals without reply if they're to go through. For anyone looking for a glimmer of hope, they've scored at least four in two of their seven Champions League games this season.
Foden with a driving run from midfield and no one spotted Gündogan making a move in behind before slotting past Sommer. His ninth Champions League goal for City means the former Dortmund and Nürnberg man has the most of any German player for a non-German club in the competition.
The former Bremen and Wolfsburg man lets the ball roll across his body from the right before striking a sweet hit into the far top corner on his left foot.
Gladbach know they need to move quickly once they do get the ball. Embolo has space as he's picked out in the middle and hits it from a good 25 yards. A deflection off Stones makes it awkward for Ederson, but he tips it around the post.
Foden ghosts between two defenders as Cancelo clips a ball forward, but the City youngster can't beat Gladbach's Swiss goalkeeper with his attempted flick.
It's perhaps not surprising from former Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola that his team is dominating the possession so far. Talk before kick-off was also of that false nine, but they even seem to be playing with a false left-back - Joao Cancelo playing mostly in midfield in the opening minutes.
The two teams are making their way out at the Puskas Arena in Budapest. Can Gladbach claim a historic result tonight?
City may have the upper hand after winning the first leg, but head coach Pep Guardiola is taking nothing for granted: “I know the quality they have. It starts with Sommer and finishes with Thuram. Like all teams they have had bad moments. It is a final. They have nothing to lose. I am sure they will try to overcome the situation. I have incredible respect for Gladbach and Marco [Rose]. They have weapons and they know how to use it. I want to see the team try to win the game.”
“We know all about City’s quality,” said Gladbach head coach Marco Rose at his pre-game press conference. “But we’re tackling this challenge head-on and we’ll be looking to score goals ourselves. We’ll need to work as hard as possible and defend well. We’re going to Budapest aiming to win.”
Gladbach midfielder Florian Neuhaus turns 24 today - will he be celebrating with a win later?
The Foals dominated for long spells against Augsburg on Friday, and even had 28 shots on goal - their highest such tally this season - but they were unable to convert most of them and ended up slipping to a defeat. Check out the match highlights right here.
As for Manchester City, it’s five changes from Saturday’s win at Fulham. Strikers Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus drop out, with former Bremen and Wolfsburg man Kevin De Bruyne set to play as a false nine in between Phil Foden and Riyad Mahrez, who both come in. Kyle Walker returns in a shift back to a back four, while one-time Dortmund and Nürnberg midfielder Ilkay Gündogan is also restored.
Thuram was unable to add to his two Champions League goals as Gladbach lost the home leg (in Budapest) 2-0, but if the Frenchman can put two past Real Madrid in 90 minutes - as he did in the groups - anything is possible. The Foals pipped Serie A leaders Inter Milan to the runners-up spot in Group B, after all, and are one of only five teams to inflict defeat on Hansi Flick's defending champions Bayern Munich. Indeed, they're the only one to beat the sextuple winners twice in Flick's 74 matches as coach. A first qualification for the Champions League knockout rounds is an achievement in itself for Gladbach, the Rhineland outfit participating in the tournament for only the third time. The last time Die Borussen lost a home leg of a UEFA tie, 1-0 to Fiorentina in the 2016/17 Europa League round of 32, they roared back to win 4-2 on the road. A repeat performance would do nicely, with a victory by three clear goals the objective. A second-half substitute in Friday's 3-1 loss to Augsburg, striker Breel Embolo is reinstated in attack in a bid to turn the tide. Left-back Ramy Bensebaini and midfielder Christoph Kramer trained with the team on Monday and have been past fit enough to be involved.
Pep Guardiola's Man City were enjoying a 22-match winning run in all competitions, before losing the Manchester derby 2-0 to city rivals United on 7 March. The runaway English Premier League leaders have since beaten Southampton 5-2 and Fulham 3-0, but have choked in previous knockout matches in the Champions League, bowing out to unfancied Lyon in last season's quarter-finals, for one. Of the lot, City's away-goals defeat to Monaco in their 2016/17 last-16 tie, which ended 6-6 on aggregate after they had won the first leg 5-3, should give Gladbach real cause for optimism. Former Werder Bremen and Wolfsburg midfielder Kevin De Bruyne was among the handful of regulars that started the Fulham game on the bench. Germany international Ilkay Gündogan, who made his name at Nuremberg and Borussia Dortmund, was another. Both do indeed start in the Hungarian capital Budapest, the neutral venue again for this second leg due to German government-enforced travel restrictions in light of the Covid-19 pandemic.
