Thomas Tuchel's Bayern Munich mustered a rousing UEFA Champions League quarter-final second leg response against Manchester City - with Joshua Kimmich scoring a second-half penalty - but the hosts ultimately lost out to Pep Guardiola's side on aggregate.
Bayern Munich 1-1 Manchester City (agg: 1-4)
Goals: 0-1 Haaland 57', 1-1 Kimmich (pen.) 83
Spurred on by a vociferous home crowd at the Allianz Arena, Bayern took the game to their opponents in the early stages. Returning from a knee injury, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting - a scorer of four goals in his six Champions League games this season - provided a threatening, physical presence while Kingsley Coman and Leroy Sane were in creative mood. As the Bundesliga leaders hit their stride, an opener was on the cards when the men in red burst away on the counter. Jamal Musiala fed Sane, whose chipped finish edged wide of the upright. At the other end, Dayot Upamecano was relieved when VAR spotted an offside in the build-up to a move that initially led to a red card for the France defender, who had pulled Erling Haaland back. Sane then drew a smart stop from goalkeeper Ederson as the second-leg pulsed.
The lively Coman kept home hopes high after the restart, the sprightly attacker continuing to seek openings while testing the City defence. Aware that adding to their first-leg haul here in Munich would likely kill off the Bayern challenge, City went in search of a goal. Yann Sommer did well to prevent the English Premier League side when saving well from Haaland after the Norwegian broke through to create a one-v-one with the Swiss keeper. There was little the former Borussia Mönchengladbach custodian could do soon afterwards, however, when Haaland slammed home to complete a City counter-thrust. Mathys Tel had an effort ruled out for offside as Bayern kept up a gallant fight that was eventually rewarded when Kimmich swept in from the penalty spot after Manuel Akanji was adjudged to have handled. Tuchel will now look to lift his side for their return to Bundesliga action and Saturday's test in Mainz.

As it happened
Bayern bow out at the quarter-final stage for the third time in a row since winning the Champions League in 2019/20. They had chances at 0-0 on the night, but it was always going to be a tall order. The focus now turns to defending the Bundesliga title.
Davies does really well to keep the ball in a ping a cross into the six-yard box. Mane lets it run across his body and blazes over from close range.
Five added minutes for Bayern to find another goal, or two, or three...
Stanisic is booked after a foul on Grealish on the edge of the area. Gündogan plays it back to the victim of that challenge, who immediately turns towards the corner in a bid to run down the clock.
The Bayern coach was already on a booking and is shown his marching orders.
Davies tears past Akanji and finds Tel with his back to goal. He rolls his man, but is off balance as he goes for goal and blazes over from 18 yards.
Kimmich slams his penalty down the middle to reduce the deficit to 4-1 on aggregate. Three Bayern goals needed to force extra time...
The referee awards a penalty after reviewing a handball offence. Mane's cross did catch Akanji's hand. Kimmich to take...
Stanisic replaces Pavard, perhaps with an eye on Saturday's trip to Mainz. Bayern just won a corner after promising play involving Coman in the City area, but Ederson was first to it.
Kimmich plays a brilliantly disguised pass into the feet of Coman. He cuts in and has a shot blocked, but is flagged for offside as Tel tucks away the rebound.
The Bayern fans are still making themselves heard as Müller and 17-year-old Tel replace Musiala and Choupo-Moting respectively. The belief that was so palpable in the build-up and throughout the first half isn't quite there now.
Musiala finds Choupo-Moting darting into the box, but his shot doesn't trouble Ederson.
Ake appears to have pulled a hamstring. Can Bayern take advantage of the defensive reshuffle?
The momentum was with Bayern, much like in the early part of the second half in the first leg, but that goal has knocked the stuffing out of them.
Kimmich warms the palms of Ederson from range, moments after Mane and Davies enter the fray in a pair of like-for-like changes.
Hammer blow for Bayern. No one gambles at the back post as Ederson blocks Coman's low strike across goal. Stones launches it long for Haaland, who knocks it down for De Bruyne and continues his run. The ex-Dortmund man gets it back, wriggles away from Upamecano and fires high into the net from inside the area. Bayern now need four goals...
Grealish slips a pass behind Upamecano for Haaland. He only has Sommer to beat - and has De Bruyne to his right - but hurries his effort and fires straight at the goalkeeper.
Ake is a little reckless on Pavard and deservedly booked. He'll really have to watch his step now...
Bayern break again with Coman, but his shot is blocked. Pavard's return pass is overcooked, and Stones is just able to clear ahead of Sane.
Encouraging stuff yet again from Bayern as a Coman cross is deflected behind for a corner. Sane rushes it, though, and doesn't clear the front post.
Tuchel resists the urge to twist. Guardiola also keeps the faith, despite seeing his side overrun at times.
Kimmich and Gündogan come to blows after contesting a ball over the top. Both are cautioned, before the whistle sounds for half time. Bayern have dominated for long spells and created chances, while Haaland blazed a penalty over at the other end. It's as you were - the record champions still need to find three goals...
Coman breaks away and feeds the run of Musiala in the City box. He appears to slip, but manages to recover his footing to cut the ball back for Choupo-Moting. His back-heeled attempt is blocked, and so is Coman's follow-up strike.
After Sane whips a snap-shot wide, Ederson is booked for taking far too long over the ensuing goal-kick.
Sane skips past a few challenges to tee up a shot for Coman. He catches it well, but the shot is too close to Ederson. Bayern have to keep playing this way...
A rush of blood from Kimmich as Bayern go on the attack. The chance opens up for him on the edge of the area, but he shanks over. This tie is not over...
The Bayern fans are celebrating it like a goal as Haaland scoops his delayed spot-kick over the bar. Let-off and a huge lift for Bayern!
The referee points to the spot after Sommer saves a deflected Gündogan shot. On review, it grazed Upamecano on the elbow. Haaland will take the penalty...
Musiala controls well on the edge of the box, before being bumped over by Rodri. There's contact, but not enough in the referee's book.
Coman on the left this time. He asks the question with a ball into the box. Ake slips as Sane collects. He could shoot, but opts to cut it back for Goretzka, who balloons over.
Coman wins a free-kick against Ake on the right-hand side. Sane whips it over the ball, but Ederson flies to his left to beat it away. That was creeping in at the near post.
Bayern Munich will go into next week’s UEFA Champions League quarter-final second leg against Manchester City needing to recover from a 3-0 deficit after losing the first leg in England.
Manchester City 3-0 Bayern Munich
Goals: 1-0 Rodri 27' (assist: Bernardo Silva), 2-0 Bernardo Silva 70' (assist: Haaland), 3-0 Haaland 76' (assist: Stones)
The hosts went on the front foot from the outset and almost forced an early goal when former Borussia Dortmund forward Erling Haaland was a whisker away from intercepting a clearance from Yann Sommer. Haaland had his team’s next opening too following a neat flick from Jack Grealish, but he opted for precision over power from the edge of the box; his shot ended up having neither and rolled straight into Sommer’s hands. The hosts eventually took the lead shortly before the half-hour mark when Rodri cut inside Jamal Musiala and curled an eye-catching strike into the top corner. Musiala had Bayern’s best chance of the half, but his goal-bound shot was blocked by Ruben Dias, while former City star Leroy Sane fizzed a long-range drive wide of the post. Thomas Tuchel’s side were grateful to Sommer that the scoreline was not any higher at the interval, the Swiss stopper producing a stunning block to keep out a close-range Ilkay Gündogan volley.
Bayern were far more proactive at the start of the second half and had three opportunities within the first eight minutes – all for Sane, and all of which were parried clear by Ederson. Leon Goretzka then had a deflected cross that sent the City goalkeeper scrambling to tip the ball over the bar before Kingsley Coman had a header blocked in a period of intense Bayern powerplay. Yet Pep Guardiola’s side retained a serious threat and Sommer made two superb stops in quick succession from Nathan Ake and Dias to keep the Reds in the game. There was nothing the Swiss custodian could do about City’s second goal, though. Grealish played Haaland clear down the left following a mistake by Dayot Upamecano and the Norwegian’s cross was headed in by Bernardo Silva at the back post. Worse was to come from a Bayern perspective after they half-cleared a corner, only for John Stones to tee up Haaland to slot in on the volley and put the English Premier League champions firmly in control of the tie.
