Manuel Neuer signs contract extension
Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer intends to keep playing at the highest level for years to come after signing a contract extension with the record champions through to 2024.
Neuer, who is widely regarded as the finest goalkeeper in the history of the game, has rediscovered his best form in recent seasons after a succession of metatarsal injuries.
The 36-year-old kept a joint league low 10 clean sheets on his way to winning a 10th straight Bundesliga title in 2021/22, whilst helping Germany become the first team to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
"I'm very pleased that my journey continues at FC Bayern," said Neuer. "We'll have a very good team again with which we can play for every title. As a goalkeeper, captain and leader, I want to be the support and a key factor in our big goals. We want to extend our title record and compete again for the DFB Cup and Champions League."
Neuer joined Bayern from Bundesliga rivals Schalke in summer 2011. He has made 472 competitive appearances for the club, famously winning the 2012/13 treble and captaining a team coached by current Germany boss Hansi Flick to the 2020 sextuple. He has recorded 226 shut-outs, whilst conceding 368 goals.
A 2014 World Cup winner, Neuer also ranks as the goalkeeper with the most clean sheets (214) and player with the most wins in Bundesliga history (315), while only teammate Thomas Müller has won more Bundesliga titles (11). The 2022/23 campaign will be his 12th in Bayern colours, and sixth since succeeding Philipp Lahm as captain in 2017.
