Freiburg youngster makes EPL move

The 23-year-old initially joins the Toffees on loan, while the Merseyside outfit have an obligation to buy, should Everton avoid relegation this season, which would bring an end to his three-year stay in the Black Forest.

Freiburg sporting director Klemens Hartenbach said: “The interest from England has been there for a while, and now an agreement has been reached that satisfies all three parties. Merlin’s move to the Premier League shows once again that young players can confidently choose SC Freiburg to be a part of their footballing journey. We wish Merlin all the best with the Toffees.”

Röhl made the switch to Freiburg from Ingolstadt in 2022, initially linking up with the club's second string. He made his Bundesliga debut midway through the 2022/23 campaign, and has gone on to make 60 appearances for the club in all competitions, scoring three goals along the way.

The former Germany U21 international follows Ritsu Dōan and Kevin Sildillia out of the door at the Europa-Park Stadion this summer, with Julian Schuster and Co. bringing in six new faces. It has been a tough start to the campaign, with Freiburg losing their first two Bundesliga matches by an aggregate scoreline of seven goals to two. They will look to bounce back when they host VfB Stuttgart after the international break.
