Thomas Müller was on target as Germany drew 1-1 in a friendly with the Netherlands as they continue their preparations for this years World Cup.
Netherlands 0-1 Germany
Goals: 0-1 Müller (45’+1), 1-1 Bergwijn (68')
Head coach Hansi Flick made four changes to his side following the victory over Israel at the weekend, with Manuel Neuer returning between the posts, and Leroy Sane, Antonio Rüdoger and Müller all back in the line-up. Neuer was called into action early on when Teun Koopmeiners was afforded a free header at a corner, but the Bayern Munich goalkeeper produced a superb reflex save. Sane and Kai Havertz both went close at the other end as Germany sought to respond, and they took the lead on the stroke of half-time when Jamal Musiala’s cross from the byline was only cleared as far as Müller, who lashed in a powerful left-footed strike from near the edge of the box.
Die Mannschaft could have made it 2-0 early in the second period when Sane drew four players to him on the counter-attack before finding the unmarked David Raum arriving in the box, but the Hoffenheim midfielder, perhaps overly eager for a maiden international goal, blazed his effort over the bar. It was an opportunity Germany would come to rue, as the hosts pulled level a quarter of an hour later when substitute Steven Bergwijn slammed in Denzel Dumfries’ headed knock-down from close range. The Netherlands were awarded a penalty just two minutes later for a foul by Thilo Kehrer on Memphis Depay, but the referee overturned his decision after consulting the pitch-side monitor. A spate of substitutions followed, disrupting the flow of the game somewhat, but Lukas Nmecha still had a chance to score the winner following a wonderful pass from Müller, but Freiburg goalkeeper Mark Flekken was equal to his shot.

As it happened!
And so it ends 1-1, which is probably a fair result on the overall balance of play. Germany took the lead just before the break through Müller's well-taken effort, which was cancelled out after the interval by Dutch substitute Bergwijn. It's the first time Die Mannschaft haven't won under Flick, but it will no doubt have been a useful test against tough opposition with a view to tightening screws ahead of the World Cup.
We're into the last minute of normal time now; there will be two minutes of stoppage time added on.
Lovely play from Müller around the Netherlands' box to find space and spy the run of Nmecha. It's perfectly weighted so that the Wolfsburg forward doesn't have to break stride, but his shot from 12 yards is well saved by Flekken.
Germany struggle to clear their lines following a corner, with van Dijk robbing Sane of the ball on the edge of the area. The ball is worked from left to right and Dumfries plays a low ball across the face of goal that needs a last-gasp intervention from Schlotterbeck to clear!
The referee goes to the pitchside monitor for a VAR review and opts to rescind the penalty he initially awarded!
Kehrer arrives too late in a challenge with Depay, and fells him in the box. The hosts have a spot-kick...
Dumfries outjumps Raum at the back post to head a cross from the left back into the middle. It falls right into the path of Bergwijn, who slams in on the half volley from close range, leaving Neuer no chance.
Wijnaldum strides forward into space down the right, but Raum puts in a lung-busting sprint to recover and win the ball back.
Schlotterbeck can only flick on a Dutch corner from the right, and the ball lands at the feet of de Ligt, lurking at the back post. He volleys it first time, but blazes well over.
Kehrer is again afforded plenty of time and space to get forward down the right. He shoots from 25 yards, but slices it wide of the post.
The first half was a tight, end-to-end affair and this half is shaping up to be the same. Both teams are attacking at pace whenever they get the ball.
A brilliant chance for Raum on the counter! Sane draws four or five players towards him before picking out the unmarked Raum, arriving in the left-hand side of the box. He could shoot first time but opts to take a touch before firing at goal with his preferred left foot. It's close, but goes just over the bar.
One change in midfield for the home side, no substitutions as yet for Germany.
Müller gives Germany a slender lead at the interval after finishing off a well-worked team move. Following some patient build-up around the edge of the box, Musiala gets to the byline and pulls the ball back into the middle, aiming for Havertz. It's just behind the Chelsea man and is only half cleared to the edge of the box, where Müller is lurking, and he lashes a powerful first-time shot into the net with his left foot.
The Dortmund attacker has been lively in the last few minutes and drifts in from the right, jinking past Schlotterbeck. He shoots low with his left foot but doesn't get much power behind it, and it's an easy save for Neuer.
Depay drives into the box and cuts inside Raum, looking to shoot on his left foot. Rüdiger is alert to the danger though, and pokes the ball away.
The hosts win possession in midfield and break forward quickly. Malen has plenty of space as he drives forward to the edge of the box, but he doesn't wrap his foot around the ball enough as he shoots from distance, and it's no trouble for Neuer.
Sane with a lovely dip of the shoulder to nip away from his marker before striding forward and shooting from 25 yards out. He catches it well but it's always rising, and sails well over the bar.
Musiala, who has been excellent again in central midfield, nicks the ball off Depay and immediately sprints forward. The only way to stop the Bayern youngster launching a counter is to foul him, with Depay pulling his shirt back. He's given a yellow card for his troubles.
Kehrer does well on Germany's right to defend Depay, who is forced to play the ball back to Malacia. He shapes to shoot from 25 yards, but it'll need something very special to beat Neuer from there and, well, this particular shot isn't...
Müller flicks the ball to Havertz on the edge of the Netherlands' area. The Chelsea forward takes a touch and then drills powerful shot at goal, but it's straight at Flekken, who makes the save.
Most of the match has been concentrated in the middle of the pitch so far, with neither side yet able to gain superiority.
Superb technique from both Müller and Sane to create Germany's first opening of the game. Sane dummies a ball from Havertz on the edge of the box and allows it through to Müller, who plays a brilliant pass into the box to pick out Sane's run. The Bayern attacker controls it on his chest and shoots, but can only find the side netting.
The Netherlands clearly did their homework and watched Germany's match against Israel, in which David Raum found space on the left time and again to pepper the opposition defence with dangerous crosses. Dumfries looks to have been the man tasked with keeping him quiet today, the Inter midfielder swiftly closing down his Hoffenheim counterpart as soon as he gets the ball.
The Netherlands win a corner on the right and the delivery finds Koopmeiners all alone on the edge of the six-yard box. He heads towards goal but it's straight at Neuer - anywhere else and that would have - and probably should have - been a goal!
Schlotterbeck is in the right place at the right time to cut out De Jong's probing forward pass that would have sent Depay through one-on-one had he not intercepted.
The Netherlands, all in orange, get the ball rolling. Germany are in an all-black kit today.
The teams are out on the pitch for the national anthems. Kick-off is just moments away.
Germany hold the edge across the teams' 44 meetings to date, having won 16 and drawn 16, with the Netherlands triumphing on 12 occasions. Prior to this game, the pair last faced off in Euro 2020 qualifying. Germany won 3-2 away in March 2019, but lost the reverse fixture 4-2 at Hamburg's Volksparkstadion in September later that year.
Former Bayern boss and current Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal has shuffled his pack twice in the wake of the 4-2 friendly win over Denmark a few days ago. Malacia and Dortmund attacker Malen both start, with Ake and Bergwijn the players to make way.
Hansi Flick has made four changes to the side that eased past Israel at the weekend. Neuer returns in goal, after ter Stegen and Trapp were given a half each, while Rüdiger, Müller and Sane all start. Tah, Weigl and Draxler drop to the bench. After an impressive showing against Israel, Musiala retains his place in central midfield alongside Gündogan.
