Nils Petersen eyes Freiburg scalp against Bayern

Former Bayern Munich forward Nils Petersen (r.) has high hopes of breaking his and Freiburg's duck in the Bavarian capital on Matchday 16.

Nils Petersen is relishing the prospect of facing Bayern Munich on Sunday, off the back of a Freiburg club record five-game winning streak.

Freiburg established that particular best-mark with a comprehensive 5-0 win over Cologne last weekend, and with Bayern stumbling to a 3-2 defeat to Borussia Mönchengladbach and getting knocked out of the DFB Cup by Bundesliga 2 opponents Holstein Kiel in midweek, there might never be a better time for the Black Forest club to register their first ever win over the Bavarians in Munich.

"It would be a dream for me and for Christian Streich to pick up points in Munich, preferably three of them," Petersen told Sport1. "But when you go to Munich, you can't afford to be big mouthed; they are too big, too strong for that."

"As a football fan, I watch very many Bayern games," continued Petersen, who spent one season with the Bavarians. "Of course they're not in the best of form right now, and I would love for us to cause an upset, but I would never make any big statements. We've played some good games there in the past, and I remember us snatching a point once with a last-minute goal from Lucas Höler.

"That gives you motivation, and I'm sure Bayern will respect us. The pressure's on them and so for us, it's pretty much a relaxing prospect, though we don't want to throw our winning streak away just like that. So we need to make a good start to the game, and preferably a successful start, like we've become accustomed to of late."

Freiburg's recent results have catapulted them to eighth in the standings going into Matchday 16, with the European qualification berths within sight.

It is a far cry from the nine-game winless run which preceded their current purple patch, but while Petersen was not getting worried then, he is not going to get carried away now.

"At the end of the day, results do the talking," Petersen said. "At the start of the season, we got four points from our first two games and it could have been six, and you thought 'we've come out of the traps well'.

"Then the word is that we've made some bad signings, not replaced those who left. If I just think about [Baptiste] Santamaria – he's getting more assured with every Bundesliga game he plays. We've gelled and we've got an incredible amount of self-confidence, and I think every single one of us has taken another step forward during this time.

"But I always have one eye over my shoulder. Even now, things have moved too quickly and I expect other teams to go on runs of their own. The danger's always there. We had eight points after 10 games and everybody saw us stuck in a relegation battle, and now we've catapulted ourselves out if it and that's where we want to stay. When you're up there, you start to pick up points in games you didn't expect to, and our game in Munich is one of those."

Petersen (r.) scored four goals in 15 competitive appearances for Bayern.

Petersen knows Bayern better than anybody within the Freiburg camp, but he says he cannot remember being part of a winning streak like the one his current club are now on when he wore the record champions' colours in 2011/12.

"This [winning streak] definitely means something to me because I've never experienced one like it before," he said. "I've been in Freiburg, and in the Bundesliga, for quite a few years now and I'd never experienced five wins in a row personally, so I'm happy to take it and am enjoying the moment."
