The selection procedure consists of a two-stage process that takes into account both the individual performance data of the players and the votes of fans and experts.
The decisive factor for considering a matchday is the month in which the Saturday of the round falls. In this case, the data refers to the players' performances on Matchdays 28, 29, 30, and 31.
April nominees
Michael Olise (FC Bayern München)
The Bayern star has almost always been a candidate for Player of the Month this season. And the 23-year-old continued to impress in April, weighing in with the most goal involvements (four) - scoring one goal while providing three assists. The English-born Frenchman collected a quarter of his 12 assists in April, always a crucial month in the title race. Olise even overtook Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz at the top of the Bundesliga assist charts.
After Harry Kane, Olise had the second-most attempts on goal (15) during the month while also providing a league-best 12 passes to shots. No other player was involved in more shots on goal (27) than Olise. His game isn't limited to his strong attack showings either. A tireless presser, Olise won an impressive 55 percent of his duels in April.
Mitchell Weiser (SV Werder Bremen)
Weiser is irreplaceable at Werder. The right wing-back has played the most minutes of any Bremen outfield player this season. He played the full 90 in all four of Werder's matches in April. Thanks to his goal in the 1-0 win against Bochum and his assist in the 2-1 victory in Stuttgart, Ole Werner’s men are still dreaming of a first European appearance since the 2010/11 season.
Weiser's two goal involvements are only bested by Oliver Burke (three) within the team. A technically strong leader, Weiser attempted the most tackles in April (86) and won a respectable 49 percent for a winger. The 31-year-old is setting high goals at Bremen and noted when he extended his contract at the club last year, "In the long run, Werder must be in the Champions League.”
Robin Koch (Eintracht Frankfurt)
Eintracht's undisputed defensive leader, Koch started all four matches in April. Against Werder Bremen and Heidenheim, he played as captain with Kevin Trapp missing through injury. The 6’4” giant won an impressive 62 percent of his duels last month and demonstrated his importance in Frankfurt’s build-up, with 92 percent of his passes finding their way to teammates, which was a club best in April.
The 28-year-old also demonstrated in April that he can do more than just clear his lines and distribute the ball well. The central defender scored against both Heidenheim and RB Leipzig with what were his only two shots on goal. Koch’s three goals this season are a personal best for the defender.
Ritsu Dōan (Sport-Club Freiburg)
Freiburg are also in contention Champions League qualification. In April, the Black Forest side picked up nine of 12 possible points. Japan international Dōan scored in the 3-2 win against Hoffenheim, and on the two previous matchdays he provided assists against Borussia Mönchengladbach and Borussia Dortmund. With three direct goal contributions, Dōan was Freiburg's top man for goal contributions.
The confident 26-year-old, who boasts solid dribbling ability and is difficult for opponents to get to grips with, repeatedly creates space for himself to score. No other Freiburg player had more shots on goal in April (10). “A lot of people talk about his attacking moves. For me, it's just as important to emphasise how hard he works and invests defensively,” his coach, Julian Schuster, explained. “This combination is what makes him so important to the team.”
Waldemar Anton (Borussia Dortmund)
“What can you say about Waldi? As a person, he ranks right up there with the best. He didn't have it easy; he had to wait his turn from me at first. But the way he conducted himself, he's a role model,” Niko Kovač said of the defender, who featured little in the first few weeks under Dortmund’s new coach. Anton has now become an integral part of Borussia's starting XI, having played the full six Bundesliga matches since.
In April, he won 54 percent of his duels and committed only one foul. He's providing more stability at the back for a resurgent Dortmund, and the Germany international is scoring goals too. He made it 2-2 in Der Klassiker away at Bayern Munich, and on Matchday 31 he scored the winner in injury time of BVB’s 3-2 triumph against Hoffenheim. Anton has already equalled his personal goalscoring record for a single campaign. He now wants to help Dortmund reach the UEFA Champions League places in the final stage of the season.
Joshua Kimmich (FC Bayern München)
The record champions have already secured their place in the Champions League, but what the Munich team and their midfield leader are after is the Bundesliga trophy. Kimmich did everything to achieve that in April. He touched the ball the most times in the Bundesliga (469), covered the third-most distance (49.2 kilometres), and completed 93 percent of his passes.
Needless to say, the 30-year-old played all 90 minutes in every match in April. He rounded off Bayern's 4-0 win in Heidenheim with a fine shot. His shot efficiency (+0.8) was the second best in April for the Bavarians, who extended Kimmich's contract until the summer of 2029 in mid-March. The No.6 and his club will be hoping to celebrate several more titles by that date.
