Germany got their UEFA Euro 2020 campaign up and running with a 4-2 victory over Portugal in Munich on Saturday, despite going behind to Cristiano Ronaldo's early strike.
Portugal 2-4 Germany
Goals: 1-0 Ronaldo (15'), 1-1 Dias o.g. (35'), 1-2 Guerreiro o.g. (39') 1-3 Havertz (51'), 1-4 Gosens (60'), 2-4 Jota (67')
Germany started superbly and Robin Gosens had a goal ruled out for offside, but they found themselves behind against the run of play after 15 minutes as Ronaldo put the finishing touches on a clinical counter-attack. It was the Portugal forward's first goal of his career against Germany and also one of his simplest as he tapped home from close range. Die Mannschaft responded in brilliant fashion, though, and struck twice in the space of five first-half minutes to turn the game on its head. The excellent Gosens provided the first as his fierce cross was turned home by Ruben Dias to draw Germany level. Borussia Dortmund man Raphael Guerreiro then became the second Portugal player to fire into his own net, as Joachim Löw's side roared into the lead.
They further extended that advantage less than quarter of an hour after the break, with Gosens again instrumental. The left-back this time laid on Kai Havertz to tap into an empty net as Germany took up a two-goal lead. That was quickly turned into three as the superb Gosens this time got himself on the scoresheet as Bayern Munich's Joshua Kimmich picked him out at the back post to head home. Portugal eventually got a second as Diego Jota found the back of the net with just over 20 minutes to play, but Germany were in control as they saw out the match and put their first three points on the board in Group F and leapfrog the holders into second place with one game to go.
