Olmo and Nkunku lead Leipzig past plucky Augsburg

Goals from Dani Olmo and Christopher Nkunku helped RB Leipzig strengthen their grip on second place in the Bundesliga after surviving a late scare against out-of-form Augsburg on Friday.

RB Leipzig 2-1 Augsburg
Goals: 1-0 Olmo (pen. 38’), 2-0 Nkunku (43’), 2-1 Caligiuri (pen. 77’)

Leipzig had won their three previous matches in all competitions and Angelino was keen to keep that momentum going early on. His thrilling run after two minutes was brought to a halt on the edge of the area, and Nkunku's subsequent free-kick was beaten away by Augsburg keeper Rafal Gikiewicz. The home side were controlling the game, and their Spanish attacker Olmo fizzed a shot just wide of the top corner on 33 minutes. Five minutes later he was denied after shooting straight at Gikiewicz, but Nordi Mukiele was caught by Reece Oxford as he looked set to get on the rebound. Gikiewicz brilliantly saved Olmo's initial effort from the penalty spot, low to his right, but the Pole had come off his line before the kick was taken. Olmo made the most of his reprieve, hitting the retake with much more power to give Leipzig the lead. Nkunku would soon get the chance to make it two. Leipzig striker Yussuf Poulsen pounced on a loose ball in the final third, drew Gikiewicz towards him, and then unselfishly set up his French teammate to score into an empty net.

Augsburg failed to have a shot at goal in the first half and that trend continued after the restart, with Angelino a constant menace down the left for the home team. It looked like Leipzig would cruise to victory but substitute Ibrahima Konate carelessly dangled out a leg behind him, which tripped up Mads Pedersen inside the area. Daniel Caligiuri then found the net from the spot despite Peter Gulacsi diving the right way. Poulsen almost replied instantly but his well-directed header was tipped behind by Gikiewicz. Marcel Sabitzer shot narrowly wide and Nkunku hit the post from close range late on, but Robert Gumny forced Gulacsi into a save with time almost up. The Leipzig keeper was again to the fore deep in injury-time as his side somehow survived an almighty goalmouth scramble to cling on.
