RB Leipzig 2-2 Borussia Mönchengladbach
Goals: 0-1 Plea (24'), 0-2 Hofmann (35'), 1-2 Schick (52'), 2-2 Nkunku (89')
Red card: Plea (60')
Having closed to within two points of Leipzig in recent weeks, Gladbach were keen on overtaking them and they combined excellently to take the lead with Marcus Thuram, Jonas Hofmann and Oscar Wendt all exchanging passes before Plea supplied the finishing touch. Thuram could have doubled Gladbach's lead ten minutes before the break, but Dayot Upamecano did enough to muscle him off the ball as he lined up his shot. The danger did not end there, however. From the consequent corner, the ball fell to Florian Neuhaus, whose excellent first-time pass sliced through the Leipzig ranks and found Hofmann, who turned expertly past Upamecano and tucked in his first goal of the season.
Julian Nagelsmann reacted to his side's uncharacteristic first-half performance by introducing Patrik Schick and Yussuf Poulsen at the start of the second half, and the Czech Republic forward needed just five minutes to get his name on the scoresheet as he accepted a gift from Yann Sommer to score his fifth goal of the season. And when Plea was shown two yellow cards in a matter of seconds momentum swung Leipzig's way, leaving Gladbach with just ten men for the final half an hour. Dani Olmo was sent on to make his debut and add further weight to a Leipzig attack which was pounding the visitors' defence, albeit without seriously threatening. Schick and Olmo both tested Sommer, with the Spaniard then hitting the post as the hosts threw everything at Gladbach. It needed something special to equalise, though, and Nkunku provided that with a stunning strike from distance in the final minute.
