Strohdiek strikes late as Leipzig held by Paderborn

Christian Strohdiek struck a stoppage-time equaliser for Paderborn as they dented RB Leipzig's UEFA Champions League qualification hopes with a 1-1 draw at the Red Bull Arena.

RB Leipzig 1-1 Paderborn
Goals: 1-0
Schick (27'), 1-1 Strohdiek (90+2')
Red card: Upamecano (43')

Leipzig were quick out of the blocks and a deflection took the sting out of an early Timo Werner shot, making the save easier for Leopold Zingerle. A more difficult question was asked of the Paderborn goalkeeper by Christopher Nkunku just minutes later, but he provided the answer once again to tip the Frenchman's curling effort wide. Werner then showed blistering pace with the ball at his feet to burst into the Paderborn penalty area, but his eventual shot was blocked. The German striker passed on his next opportunity to shoot from a similar position, choosing instead to tee up Schick to slot the ball past Zingerle from a better position. The home team's confidence took a blow late in the first half, however, when Dayot Upamecano was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Schick was sacrificed by Julian Nagelsmann with Marcel Halstenberg brought on to fill the void left by Upamecano at the heart of the defence as the teams emerged for the second half, and the hosts were almost immediately on the back foot. Werner cut a lone figure up front, but Leipzig still posed a threat when they managed to break and a Dani Olmo daisy-cutter brought a fine save out of Zingerle on the hour mark. Werner squandered an even better chance to give Leipzig a cushion when he got past Paderborn's last defender and the onrushing Zingerle, but he fired his shot wide of the gaping goal. Paderborn put the pressure on and Christopher Antwi-Adjei fired into the side-netting, but the bottom-placed side lacked invention in the final third and, despite dominating possession they could not turn that into gilt-edged chances until stoppage time had started. Then, Peter Gulacsi fluffed his first real test of the game and could only parry Marlon Ritter's shot to the feet of Strohdiek, who salvaged Paderborn a point from close range.
