Werner's young bulls on the charge

Johan Bakayoko made it back-to-back away games with goals after his winner against Wolfsburg.

Bouncing back from a sobering season-opener where they lost 6-0 to Bayern Munich, Ole Werner's RB Leipzig are looking on the up and charging up the table with bigger smiles and greater confidence since that August evening.

The disappointment was palpable as Die Roten Bullen came to terms with their heaviest Bundesliga defeat to date, and on the opening day of the season at that.

Those six unanswered goals meant that the humbling loss took the crown from last term’s 5-1 reverse in exactly the same stadium.

Ole Werner’s young side were 3-0 down by the halfway point in a game where the defending champions looked a threat almost every time they entered the final third. Aside from a disallowed Antonio Nusa goal, who was a bright spark after his introduction, Leipzig were blunt going forward, and alarmingly porous at the back.

The nature of the defeat may have sent Leipzig fans reaching for the panic button, but Werner and his team of talents have since made sure that the only thing being pressed are opposition backlines.

The four games since that loss in Munich have seen them score seven goals and concede just once, winning all four in the process.

Their most recent win came against hit-and-miss Wolfsburg, who lost to Borussia Dortmund last week and failed to hold on for victory against an incredibly stubborn Cologne in a 3-3 draw.

Leipzig's win over Wolfsburg was another example of how far they've come since their Matchday 1 defeat.

In that latter game, 19-year-old Assan Ouédraogo, now fully fit following an injury-hampered 2024/25 season, settled any nerves with his early effort, before summer arrival Rômulo scored his second goal in Leipzig colours to give them the lead again after Jan Thielmann had equalised for the visitors.

Captain David Raum’s expertly executed free-kick added a third before half-time, with the Red Bulls then standing firm to secure a third consecutive win.

At the Volkswagen Arena, both Wolfsburg and Leipzig created enough for a goal-fest with both teams accumulating an xG tally higher than two.

Ultimately though, it was Johan Bakayoko whose clinical finish made the difference, as Werner's young charges pounced upon a mistake in the Wolves half to settle the tie as early as the eighth minute.

Bakayoko was clinical in front of goal to give Leipzig the win against the Wolves.

As such, Leipzig are now on a four-game winning streak following successes over Heidenheim, Mainz, Cologne and Wolfsburg. Furthermore, Rômulo and Bakayoko are so far looking capable of filling the shoes of departed forward duo Loïs Openda and Benjamin Šeško, with four goals between them in the past four games.

Despite his unfortunate penalty miss against Wolfsburg, Christoph Baumgartner has stepped up to fill the Xavi Simons-sized holed in attacking midfield, starting in each of those four wins and netting his first goal of the season against Heidenheim.

With Nusa complementing the aforementioned trio in the final third, Leipzig have taken a minimum of 16 shots at goal in each of their four league victories this term.

Their attacking persistence has been enabled by their sturdy defence, with experienced head Willi Orbán being central to their hat-trick of clean sheets.

The Hungarian rock is second in the league when it comes to aerial duels, having already won 26 in the opening weeks of the campaign. His partnership with Castello Lukeba appears to be going from strength to strength, with the Frenchman’s range of passing and pace in transitions offer the ideal foil for his defensive partner.

Castello Lukeba (r.) continues to develop into an exceptional centre-half, helped by the experience of Willi Orbán alongside him.

The man to the right of the long-serving Orbán in defence, Ridle Baku, has also been a force of nature since the defeat against Bayern.

Having completed both the most sprints (125) and second-most intensive runs (434) in the Bundesliga so far, the rampaging right-back has been busting a gut to make sure he’s impacting both the attacking and defensive sides of the game.

He proved he can do just that against Heidenheim, providing the assist for Rômulo’s tidy back-heeled finish and winning 15 duels as his side secured a comfortable first three points of the season.

Ridle Baku has been a key figure in each of Leipzig's recent wins.

Baku’s former employers in Wolfsburg have now also been swept aside by Leipzig, who will hope continue their winning streak and keep pace with a Bayern side who are just three points ahead of them at the top of the table.

The 12 points Leipzig have collected since their sobering evening in Munich have them sitting in third place, one point short of Niko Kovač’s Dortmund side.
