“Another nomination, Robert!” – Will Thomas Müller be celebrating yet another award for Lewandowski with the Laureus Sportsman of the Year 2022?

Bayern Munich goal machine Robert Lewandowski has been named among the six nominees for the Laureus Sportsman of the Year 2022, competing alongside Tom Brady, Novak Djokovic, Caeleb Dressel, Eliud Kipchoge and Max Verstappen.

Lewandowski, 33, was previously among the final candidates last year after helping Bayern to an unprecedented sextuple and has now been shortlisted again after another record-breaking 2021.

The Bayern man struck a historic 41 goals from only 29 appearances in the 2020/21 Bundesliga season before ending the calendar year on 43 – another never before achieved figure. On both occasions he snatched records that had stood for 49 years by the late, great Gerd Müller.

In all competitions, Lewandowski amassed 61 goals in just 51 games over 2021 – a return that saw him retain his title as the Best FIFA Men’s Player for the second year running, ahead of Lionel Messi and Mo Salah. Lewy had also come second to the Argentine in the Ballon d’Or, having no doubt missed out the previous year when France Football cancelled the award.

The Laureus World Sports Awards celebrate the achievement of athletes and the inspirational stories from the world of sport across seven categories: sportsman, sportswoman, team (which Bayern won last year), breakthrough, comeback, disability and action sports.

The nominees are selected by a panel of 1300 sports journalists. The winners are announced at the ceremony in April, having been voted for by the 71 Members of the Laureus World Sports Academy.
