Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski has added another record to his collection after becoming the first player in Bundesliga history to score in the opening nine games of a campaign.

Union Berlin became the latest victims of the prolific Pole’s outstanding purple patch as he bettered the eight-match mark set by former Borussia Dortmund teammate Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the 2015/16 season.

Lewandowski netted in the second half at the Allianz Arena to put Bayern 2-0 up in an eventual 2-1 victory that took Niko Kovac's charges to the top of the league table.

“I wasn’t sure if it was already a record because I didn’t want to think too much about it," the 31-year-old told bundesliga.com after the final whistle.

"I didn’t want my thoughts during the game to be about a record. So I just forgot about it and then waited to see what happened after the game. I’m just focused on the match and on the football. It’s special to do something like this, of course, but the most important thing is that we got the three points.”

Even by the standards of a player who had netted 214 times in 298 appearances in Germany's top flight before Saturday's clash with Union, Lewandowski's goal capped off a remarkable achievement.

With 13 goals in nine games, and 22 in 18 in all competitions for club and country this season, the Bundesliga's highest-scoring non-German player could yet send more records tumbling, with Gerd Müller's all-time best-mark of 40 goals in a season from 1971/72 in his sights.
