Guirassy shares Champions League scoring crown

Borussia Dortmund's Serhou Guirassy has finished joint-top of the Champions League goalscoring charts for 2024/25, the 29-year-old's 13 strikes in the recently-concluded tournament earning him a place alongside Barcelona's Raphinha in first place on the prestigious podium.

Guirassy's impressive haul of 13 goals came in just 14 appearances while he also managed four assists in European club football's elite competition this term as BVB reached the quarter-finals a year after going all the way to the showpiece.

The ex-VfB Stuttgart striker was on target against Club Brugge as Die Schwarzgelben opened the new-look tournament with victory back in September. He followed up with a brace in Dortmund's 7-1 drubbing of Celtic. Further strikes against Dinamo Zagreb, Bologna, Shakhtar Donetsk and Sporting followed while there was also a third scoring brace of the competition against Barcelona in November.

BVB would meet the Catalan giants again in the last eight and, although Guirassy netted a memorable hat-trick in a stirring second leg, the Bundesliga side had left themselves with just too much to do to avoid going out to the Blaugrana by 5-3 on aggregate.

Barcelona's Raphinha - on target in the first-leg of that tie - also finished on 13 Champions League goals for the campaign. Bayern Munich's Harry Kane - the Bundesliga's top scorer for the second season in a row - finished joint-second on the UCL list with 11 goals, the same tally as ex-Bayern and Dortmund star Robert Lewandowski.

After becoming only the third Dortmund striker to have registered more than 10 goals in a single UCL campaign after Lewandowski and Erling Haaland, Guirassy now holds the outright Dortmund record for Champions League goals in a single season after his efforts this term.

Guirassy's impressive form wasn't reserved only for European competition either. The former Rennes forward also struck 21 times in the Bundesliga - the joint-second highest tally with Bayer Leverkusen's Patrik Schick. Niko Kovač's men went unbeaten in their final eight games of the season, winning seven of them to clinch fourth spot and a place in the 2025/26 Champions League. Guirassy weighed in with seven goals in his last eight Bundesliga appearances as BVB successfully completed their qualification push.

Dortmund and Guirassy will next turn their attentions to the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, where the Black-Yellows will look to qualify from a section containing Fluminense, Mamelodi Sundowns and Ulsan, starting from 17 June.
