Okugawa fires Bielefeld past Stuttgart

Struggling Arminia Bielefeld picked up their first win of the Bundesliga season, Masaya Okugawa getting the only goal of the game as they came away from Stuttgart's Mercedes-Benz Arena with a 1-0 victory.

With just two wins in 10 games and an injury-ravaged squad, Stuttgart coach Pellegrino Matarazzo made four changes from the side that lost 4-1 to Augsburg last Sunday, Borna Sosa notably swapping to the right flank. With the Croatian on corners, Stuttgart were exposed when one such set-piece from the left broke down, and Okugawa took full advantage, capping off the visitors' counter-attack with a low finish beyond Fabian Bredlow. The hosts didn't let their heads go down, though, and Daniel Didavi tested Stefan Ortega with a stinging effort from the edge of the Bielefeld box soon after. Didavi should have got Stuttgart back on level terms towards the end of the half when Nikolas Nartey sent a pass his way at the back post, but Jacob Laursen got just enough of his body in the way to deflect the chance clear and it was 1-0 at the break.

Neither side made any changes at the break, but Bielefeld came out with renewed attacking intent, Okugawa and Patrick Wimmer first among those looking to pick holes in the Stuttgart defence. Matarazzo sent Wahid Faghir - about his only fit recognised striker - into the fray for the final half hour, and Stuttgart looked better for it. Roberto Massimo tried to test Ortega from a tight angle soon after, but he was off balance and the keeper collected comfortably. Bielefeld were only the width of the post away from pulling further clear, though, their second-half substitute Andres Andrade heading Florian Krüger's free-kick off the woodwork. The last 10 minutes were end-to-end, Janni Serra thumping a late effort off the Stuttgart crossbar before Bielefeld held on for the win.

Okugawa scored his second goal in 10 games this season.
