Kane, Díaz secure Supercup win

Luis Díaz marked his competitive Bayern Munich debut with what proved to be the winning goal as the defending Bundesliga champions beat DFB Cup holders VfB Stuttgart in the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup.

VfB Stuttgart 1-2 Bayern Munich
Goals: 0-1 Kane 18', 0-2 Díaz 77' (assist: Gnabry), 1-2 Leweling 90'+4 (assist: Andrés)

After some impressive showings in pre-season following his summer transfer from Liverpool, Díaz was handed his first competitive start as a Bayern player at the MHP Arena.

Stuttgart talisman Nick Woltemade was also involved from the get-go, despite being heavily linked with the record champions during the summer break.

Stuttgart CEO Alexander Wehrle categorically ruled out such a move prior to kick-off in the newly renamed Franz Beckenbauer Supercup, fittingly played out in front of a capacity crowd.

Serge Gnabry had not long threatened an opening goal when Michael Olise's forward pass evaded Stuttgart newcomer Luca Jaquez's attempted clearance and found Harry Kane on the edge of the area. The England striker was already going to ground as he went to shoot, but still managed to arrow a confident finish past Fabian Bredlow.

Konrad Laimer fired off target and Leon Goretzka and Olise headed over as Bayern went in at the break with a slender, but deserved advantage.

Bayern's second shot on target also came by way of the Olise-Kane connection, but on this occasion Bredlow was able to make a superb block at close quarters with just over an hour gone. Stuttgart's stand-in custodian then watched a fierce Olise effort sail comfortably wide of the target.

Stuttgart's first real chance arrived in the 74th mininute, but Woltemade could not keep his header from Maximilian Mittelstädt's left-wing cross down. Moments later, Manuel Neuer was called into action for the first time to beat away Jamie Leweling's deflected drive

Shaken but not stirred, Bayern delivered the perfect response as Gnabry crossed for Díaz to head confidently past Bredlow with his first attempt on goal.

Leweling scored from close range to halve the deficit with virtually the last kick of the game as Bayern celebrated a first Supercup win in three years.

Man of the Match - Manuel Neuer

Official Bundesliga app users voted Neuer as the Man of the Match

The Bayern captain had little to do, but delivered when called upon at a crucial stage in the second half and was his usual commanding presence throughout.

He joins former teammate Thomas Müller on a record-equalling eight Supercup wins.

Díaz, Kane, Gnabry, Woltemade and Stuttgart right-back Josha Vagnoman were the other candidates.
